Revamped Google News App Released With Fresh UI and Content

Confirming a rumor from last week prior to Google I/O, the Mountain View company pulled back the curtains on the all new Google News app and service yesterday at the event.  The new look site and app brings an significantly updated, more Material Design look to the apps while also bringing more visual and video content along with it.

Along with the updated look, there is now a Newsstand tab in the app which brings in magazine and online content subscriptions to the app.  With that, it spells the end of the Google Play Newsstand app.

Functionally the new Google News app is easy to use with a four tab bottom navigation to bring you to the content you want at the time:  For You, Headlines, Favorites and the afore mentioned Newsstand.  Contextually, the For You tab is where you will likely spend most of your time as it is content provided to you based on your interests & likings that you have told Google about previously (you can setup those interests in Google Assistant).

As for the new Newsstand tab, you can subscribe to free or pay-for content from a wide range of sources on a wide range of topics, from news, politics, fashion, entertainment, and tech talk.  If you have a magazine subscription, like the old Play Newsstand app, you can have the new News app download the latest edition automatically for you.

The new Google News app is rolling out now for both Android and iOS – in theory.  At the time of this article, it was still not available for iOS.  That hopefully will change later today.
