Chrome Updated With More Security Fixes

If you are a Chrome browser user on Windows, Mac or Linux, there is another new update coming your way.  The team announced on the Chrome Releases blog yesterday that build 47.0.2526.80, for those keeping score at home, has been released to the stable channel and that updates to your installed version of Chrome are rolling out.  In all, there are 7 security fixes in this release, 2 of which were considered high priority.  As has become the practice, Google is not releasing details of what exactly was addressed in the release just yet.

Access to bug details and links may be kept restricted until a majority of users are updated with a fix. We will also retain restrictions if the bug exists in a third party library that other projects similarly depend on, but haven’t yet fixed.

If you have Chrome installed on your PC, Mac or Linux device, the update will come to you via an OTA update.  You can also force the issue by going into Settings>Advanced Settings and check for an update.

Chrome for Android New Bookmarks Location

Wednesday if you caught up on the site I posted that there is a new version of Chrome for Android that has been released.  You can read that post for some of the nitty-gritty but it is mostly aimed at security fixes, performance enhancements and other under-the-hood updates.  There was however one new feature and it is one that I suspect a lot of readers will appreciate.  The bookmarks and recent history tabs have moved out of the menu and onto the main screen when you start the app.

Previously, when you want to open up your bookmarks or you want to find a site you had visited in your history, you had to use the menu in the upper right corner of the display.  It was a bit of a pain honestly as it put you a step removed from quickly being able to access them.  The Chrome team apparently felt the same way.  In this update they have both moved to the bottom of the screen so you can access either with just one tap.

Chrome for Android Update Brings Lots of Fixes

Over on the Chrome Releases Blog, the announcement has come that an updated version of the browser is coming to Android.  The update should be hitting the Google Play Store over the course of the next few hours which means it will start coming to devices via an OTA update soon thereafter. The updated version is 47.0.2526.27 for those keeping score at home and it falls in line with the announcement on Monday of version 47 for the desktop version of Chrome and Tuesday of ChromeOS.

As for what has been updated or changed in this update, it is as Google describes “a barge load of performance and stability fixes”.  If you really want to dig into the GIT information you can see all the fixes in the release but it is a long, long list.

Chrome Updated With Latest Security Fixes

Today the Chrome team has announced the release of Chrome 47 to the stable channel, the latest update to the browser on Windows, Mac and Linux.  The update brings with it some 41 security fixes that range from critical to low impact.  Ultimately if you are a user of the browser, you will want to get this update ASAP.  It should come to you OTA but you can always force the issue by going to Settings>About in Chrome and it will go look for the update for you.  For those who are curious or like to keep version score numbers at home, this build is 47.0.2526.73 m on PCs.

In all, the update addresses 1 Critical update, 13 High priority updates, 6 Medium priority updates and 3 Low priority updates.  Generally speaking, severity of a security flaw is determined by number of users impact, potential data exposure and other factors.

Google Drive Sees Drag and Drop Feature Added

Google Drive has an update rolling out for the web version of the cloud storage platform that will come in handy for power users.  Over the course of the next few days, Google will be adding a drag and drop feature for folders to the service.  What this will mean is that a user could drag a file from their desktop to Google Drive while it is open in the Chrome browser and drop it into the storage service. This will all but end the time consuming and awkward opening up of a file dialog box to perform the feature.  Now if this sounds familiar, it should.  You can drag and drop files to the root of your Google Drive now.  This update allows you to drop directly to folders.

The news of the update came from the Google Apps Blog and in order to take advantage of the feature, you will have to be using the latest version of Chrome or Firefox and will have to have that browser tab open to Drive.

Google Updates Chrome for Windows, Mac and Linux

Yesterday I posted on the updated build of Chrome OS which contained several security and bug fixes.  They have now pushed out an updated version of the Chrome browser for Windows, Mac and Linux users.  The updated build is version 46.0.2490.86 for those keeping score at home and your current install should automatically update to this build via an OTA update.

Interestingly, in the release notes for this build, Google did not expose the number or types of fixes that were addressed in the update.

Note: Access to bug details and links may be kept restricted until a majority of users are updated with a fix. We will also retain restrictions if the bug exists in a third party library that other projects similarly depend on, but haven’t yet fixed.

As a general rule, Google will post the list of bug fixes and other updates in a release of Chrome. This time they haven’t which may indicate that a serious security flaw was discovered and they don’t want to expose it just yet.

Google Ending Chrome Support For Windows XP

File this under “Not Shocked” but it is official:  Google is ending support of Chrome for Windows XP, Windows Vista and a handful of older Mac OS X versions.  The news came on the Chrome blog earlier today that starting in April 2016, they will no longer be updating and officially supporting these legacy OS’.

The news comes largely due to Apple and Microsoft not supporting these older versions themselves so Google is more-or-less following suit.

Chrome OS Update Released With Improvements and Fixes
