Microsoft Groove Music Service To Be Ended Effective December 31st.

In a surprise move, Microsoft has announced that the Microsoft Groove music service will be ended on December 31st of this year with Spotify becoming the music streaming service of choice.

As of October 2, 2017, we’re excited to announce that we’re partnering with Spotify to bring the world’s largest music streaming service to you. We know that access to the best streaming experience, the largest catalog of music, and a variety of subscriptions are on the top of your list. Now you can move your curated playlists and collection from Groove directly into Spotify.

It is a surprising move by Microsoft but equally, given how competitive the streaming music market is these days, it isn’t completely shocking.

Microsoft Groove for Android Update Brings Improved Basic Features

Microsoft Groove, the Redmond, Washington company’s music app and service, has a solid update rolling out for Android users.  The update is version 11.0925.1507 for those keeping score at home and brings two new features that, frankly, should have already been in the app.

The first new feature is the ability to search your music that you have stored in your OneDrive account and search it only.  Previously, the app would only bubble up music tracks that were in the Groove library itself.  That’s fine right up until you have that song or album that isn’t in the library.  Admittedly, it isn’t often, but that Indie band’s CD you ripped into OneDrive from the bar last weekend?  Yeah, that’s probably not there.  Now it is no big deal as you can search your own OneDrive library for songs.

Microsoft Groove Music App Gets A Healthy Update

Microsoft has rolled out a sizable update to the Microsoft Groove app, their music streaming and subscription service.  The update brings a lot of changes to the app that frankly, catches it up to other services that are out there.  This update is rolling out now so if you have the app installed, expect the OTA today or tomorrow.

The biggest new edition is that you can explore relevant artists, albums and songs for a particular genre.  This not only allows you to see your favorite artists but also expose you to some that you may not have heard of before.  It is a great way to discover new artists in your favorite kind of music.
