Top 10 Applications - 2006

It's that time of the year again!

That's right; Christmas are just around the corner.  It is getting cool (like in the 40's) here in Texas and 2007 will be here before we know it.

This time of the year also means it is time for the annual Clinton Fitch (Dot) Com! Top-10 Applications list.  As I discussed with my good friend and partner at HPC:Factor, Chris Tilley, the job of narrowing down this list was just that - a job - this year.  So many applications have been released, many updated to better integrate with Windows Mobile 5 and the task of whittling down to just 10 was tough.

As you look through the list you will see some repeat "winners" from 2005.  In most cases these applications have been updated since then and offer either new features or better integration to WinMo 5.  You will also see some new applications this year, two of which actually reside on your PC and not your device.

So with that, I'm happy to present to you the 3rd Annual Clinton Fitch (Dot) Com! Top 10 Application List.

10.  Spb Software House's Spb Diary
9.  Jeyo's Mobile Extender
8.  WebIS' FlexMail 2007
7.  Spb Software House's Spb Insight
6.  SoftMaker's TextMaker 2006
5.  WebIS' Pocket Informant 2007
4.  Ilium Software's eWallet
3.  Spb Software House's Spb Pocket Plus
2.  DVD Catalyst GT
1.  PhatWare's CalliGrapher

Each application will have a link to the developer's website, a link to my review (if I have reviewed it) and a link to the Clinton Fitch (Dot) Com! store (if available) where you can try or buy the application.  If you use the coupon code CFXMAS you will receive a 20% discount on any of these application you purchase (excluding items sold on PocketGear).  That could save you nearly $60!  The coupon is valid until January 1, 2007.

I offer this list as suggestion and information for you, the site visitor. You are the reason I have the site in the first place and my thanks to each of you can't be expressed enough.  Use the list as a basis for your Christmas list either for your spouse, friend or other Windows Mobile users (“other” really meaning yourself!).

As a final note, starting in January 2007 I will have a continual Top 25 list on the site.  By clicking the button which will be on the site you will be able to see the these applications and I will also have a coupon to use for purchasing them as well.  But on this I need your help.  I will have a forum where I will welcome your feedback and suggestions on what should be on that list.  Look for more information on this in January via the RSS feed.

Thanks as always for visiting, reading and recommending Clinton Fitch (Dot) Com!

10.  Spb Software House's Spb Diary

This year's list begins with the number 10 application being the same as it was in 2005.  Spb Software House is one of the leading developers in the Windows Mobile community and in 2006 updated their award winning Spb Diary application with more features, greater stability and full Windows Mobile 5 integration.  Spb Diary allows you to have your Calendar, Contacts, Inbox, Tasks, Notes and new-for-2006 Special Events on your Today screen as a stand alone plug in or as an integrated part of Spb Pocket Plus.  Spb went a step further and has made Spb Diary where it will integrate with WebIS' Pocket Informant and FlexMail applications as well as PhatWare's PhatNotes.  It is a great application that offers you great flexibility with your vital PIM information only a tap away on the Today screen.

9.  Jeyo Mobile Extender

Throughout the world, on any given day, over 2 billion SMS (or Text Messages) messages are sent each day.  That is a lot of communication and the number is increasing at an exponential rate.  Coming in at number 9 this year is Jeyo's Mobile Extender.  Mobile Extender is not actually an application for your Windows Mobile device but a plug-in to Microsoft Outlook which allows you to send and receive SMS messages from your desktop when your device is connected to your PC via ActiveSync.  With it, SMS messaging is as simple as typing an email!  One key side benefit includes the ability to have a backup of your SMS messages (in your Outlook PST file).  For those of you who SMS, Jeyo's Mobile Extender should be a must have application.

8.  FlexMail 2007

Throughout the history of Pocket PCs the Inbox application is one that has not grown at near the rate of the other PIM (Personal Information Manager) applications such as Contacts or Calendar.  Indeed even in Windows Mobile 5 the included Messaging inbox is not able to handle what by today's standards are commonplace such as HTML email.  For power users of their devices, especially with Push Mail functionality, these limitations can be frustrating and at worst limiting.  At Number 8 then is what I feel is one of the best mail applications around.  WebIS' FlexMail 2007 allows you to do essentially anything you could do from Microsoft Outlook on your desktop:  Accept or reject appointments, full IMAP support, HTML email, flags, address auto-complete and signatures.  Top that with the amazing array of configuration that you can do with FlexMail and it truly becomes the mail application for Windows Mobile.

7.  Spb Insight

I fully admit that I am an RSS junkie.  RSS, or Rich Site Summary, is a quick and easy way to get news, information and updates from your favorite websites.  Indeed most sites today have at least one RSS feed and many have multiple available.  Clinton Fitch (Dot) Com! has no less that 5!  So when Spb Software House jumped into the RSS application frenzy they came in a little behind the game.  Still, their 1.0 offering of Spb Insight was worthy of being in the Top 10 and comes in at number 7.  Insight has a wide range of channels arranged by categories that are automatically downloaded from Spb when you use the online catalog within the application.  Further, when downloads of feed content is done, it downloads all of it, making it easy to read the entire article in the feed later while offline.  This is something that most RSS readers for Windows Mobile don't do and what separates this application from others.  Spb Insight fully supports the RSS 2.0 standard so images and formatting are displayed.  The potential for Insight is great and I expect that in 2007 it will be in this list once again.

6.  SoftMaker's TextMaker 2006

In 2002 when Germany's SoftMaker released TextMaker 2002, it was a huge success.  Overcoming the limitations of the mobile Word application included in Pocket PCs with formatting, security and easy transfer from device to desktop, it quickly became the de-facto standard for any serious word processing user on their device.  Now four years later SoftMaker has updated TextMaker and it comes in at number 6 on this years list.  TextMaker 2006 is not just an upgrade to the 2002 version but a serious leap forward.  All of the high-end features of a word processor are included including formatting, fonts, password security of files, page and column breaks and so forth.  It is an application that if you can think of it, it probably does it.  TextMaker 2006 is one of the most expensive application on the list but it is well worth the cost if you need serious word processing horsepower on your WinMo device.
