Review of Ilium Software's eWallet 5.0 on Clinton Fitch (Dot) Com!
Ilium Software's eWallet 5.0
Unless you are one who has made
a concerted effort to shun technology, chances are that you are like most people
in the world today and have multiple bits of private information that you need
to keep secure. Whether it be PINs, bank account information, passwords or
credit card numbers, the vast majority of us have what seems like an endless
flow of these types of information. The news today is replete with stories
of stolen identity and credit card fraud and it can be a daunting task to keep
it all secure. Compounding this problem is the mobility of our world
today. I carry around much of my personal information on my Windows Mobile
device so I can access it quickly and easily when I am on the go or traveling.
Having that information secure is of paramount concern in case my device is lost
or stolen.
My resolution to this problem
came a few years ago from the team at Ilium Software in their application
eWallet. eWallet allows you to secure your personal information in a
single file which can be accessed on your device or desktop and that file is
encrypted along with having a password attached to it. It has proven to be
one of the most used applications I have had for any of my mobile devices
including my Handheld PC days. It is an application that I believe every
Windows Mobile user should have on their device. With the latest version
of this award winning application, Ilium has once again hit the mark.
eWallet 5.0 takes an already
outstanding application and makes it even better. All of the features that
have been in eWallet since the 3.x days are still there: complete
customization of wallet cards, custom categories, and 256-bit encryption.
What has been added though in 5.0 takes the application to a wholly new
functionality and usability level. With 5.0 you can sync to virtually any
type of device and media type: USB cards, your PC, other PCs on your
network and remote locations via FTP. Further, that synchronization
process has been completely overhauled, making synchronization more reliable and
faster. Top it off with an new easy-to-follow companion tool and a
completely new icon set and easier customization of those icons and you come to
appreciate how far this application has come along. If you are a user of
eWallet already then 5.0 will prove to be a worthy upgrade. If you are new
to eWallet now is the time to get it!
eWallet 5.0 requires
approximately 4.5MB of storage space on your Windows Mobile device and can be
installed in either main memory or on a storage card. Installation is done
via ActiveSync but the 5.0 version of eWallet supports the upcoming Windows
Vista platform and its Mobile Device Center. This new version requires
that you have at least a Pocket PC 2003 or higher. For your Windows PC you
will need approximately 12MB of hard disk space to install the application.
By
default, eWallet creates a start-up wallet called My Wallet. You can also
create your own wallet files or even multiple wallet files should you
choose to do so. Creating a new wallet file can be done either from the
desktop version of eWallet or the Windows Mobile version. However, it is
important to note that if you create your new wallet file on your device
synchronization will be done via ActiveSync and not SyncPro, the Ilium
synchronization tool. The advantages to SyncPro are numerous but the key
new sync features in 5.0 involves this part of eWallet. With SyncPro you
are able to synchronize your wallet with USB cards/sticks, a PC on you network
such as a server or an FTP server. These options are not available in
ActiveSync. It is my recommendation that if you are going to create a new
wallet that you create it from your desktop so you can take advantage of all of
the benefits SyncPro offers. If you do decide to create a wallet on your
device you can go back later and convert wallets to use SyncPro instead of
ActiveSync.

To create a
new wallet on your desktop, click File>New Wallet to start the creation wizard.
The wizard will walk you through what you want to name the wallet and it's
location (which is now in My Documents in version 5.0), the password for that
wallet as well as a hint for it in case you forget the password. New in
this version you can select to have the wallet not require a password in order
to be opened and viewed. If you choose this option you are warned that
anyone can open and view the contents of this wallet should your device be lost
or stolen. Unless you are storing non-private information I recommend that
you password the wallet just to be safe. Finally you are asked if you plan
on synchronizing this wallet with a mobile device. If you choose no then
the file is created and you are ready to add categories and cards to it.
If you choose to set up synching, you are prompted to determine how you want to
synchronize your new wallet.

As
mentioned before, SyncPro allows you to synchronize your wallet file to a
multitude of locations including FTP servers and servers on your network.
By default, if you choose to sync with a mobile device, your device will
automatically appear in the SyncPro locations of where to sync too. If you
want to add a location click the Add button and enter the proper information and
creditials. If you are synchronizing with a Windows Mobile device, you can
choose how to have that file synchronized and which device - your PC or your
device - has priority. For example, you can set up SyncPro to sync the
data in your wallet between the two so if you make an update to your wallet
either on your PC or on your device, it will synchronize that change with the
other. Likewise you can set it up to where your PC or your device has
priority and will overwrite the other.
