Jeyo Mobile Extender 2.0

With the rapid growth in Windows Mobile integrated devices and cellular phones, the ability to communicate with others is easier and more readily accessible than ever before.  One of these forms of communication is Short Message Service, or SMS.  Most people simply refer to SMS as Text Messaging.  In the United States alone there are 165 million devices capable of SMS.  Further, there are 1.5 billion SMS messages sent or received each day globally while only about 100 million coming from people within the United States.  Still, SMS traffic continues to triple annually in the United States and is clearly a growing communication trend.

Microsoft and cellular providers globally have paid attention to this trend and with the introduction of Windows Mobile 5.0, a wide range of "converged" devices have come to market.  These devices have both the traditional Pocket PC functionality as well as cellular functionality.  Examples of these include Cingular's 8125, T-Mobile's MDA and the O2 Xda Atom.  Now, more than ever, one device can be carried to cover all your mobile needs!

Seeing this convergence trend as well as the explosive growth of SMS in the United States, Jeyo Incorporated has created a line of products aimed at simplifying SMS sending and receiving and SMS management.  One of these products is Mobile Extender, a Microsoft Outlook plug-in that allows you to send and receive SMS messages from your desktop PC.  Now while you are at work or at home and your Windows Mobile Pocket PC Phone or Smartphone is connected to your desktop, you can still stay in contact with those who SMS you without ever having to pick up your device.  Sending a SMS message is as simple as sending a traditional email!  Further, because all of your SMS messages are kept within Outlook, you have a backup of all of your messages on your desktop PC.

Jeyo Mobile Extender requires 20MB of hard disk space on your PC running Windows 2000 (SP3 or greater) or Windows XP.  You will also need to have Microsoft Outlook 2002 or Outlook 2003 (required for Unicode support) and your Windows Mobile Pocket PC Phone or Smartphone must be running Windows Mobile 2002, 2003, 2003SE or 5.0.  Installation of Jeyo Mobile Extender is done through an executable file with no additional installation required for your Pocket PC Phone or Smartphone.

Once installed and your phone device is connected via ActiveSync, you are ready to send and receive SMS messages through Outlook.  In your System Tray you will have a Jeyo Mobile Extender icon which will indicate to you if your device is connected and able to send and receive SMS from Outlook.  When it is not connected, you will see the icon with a red X.

When your device is connected, you can right-click it and perform a Send/Receive of SMS messages or you can create a new SMS message.  When creating a new message, you will have a simple dialog box much like that of a new email message in Outlook.  In the To box simply type the phone number of the person you wish to send the SMS to.  If you do not remember their number, click the To: button or the Address Book and search for the contact.  Multiple contacts can be selected as well, saving time if you need to send the same message to multiple people.  After your contacts are selected, simply type the message into the message box.  Because SMS messages are by their nature short, you have a single message limit of 160 characters (or 80 Unicode).  If you type a message longer than 160 characters, your SMS message will be split into two messages.  Near the top of the SMS message window, you will be able to see how many characters you have in your message.  When your message is complete, click the Send button to send your message or Save to save it in Drafts.  It is as simple as that!  Because all of your SMS messaging is done via Outlook, there is no need to pick up your device.  It is all done from your desktop PC.

Unicode support in Jeyo Mobile Extender is a feature that many overlook but it adds a tremendous value to the application.  With Unicode support, users can send SMS messages in multiple languages.  Also, you can receive messages in a different language and they will be displayed for you in that language.  This assumes that the language in question is installed on your Windows PC.  As we continue to grow to a more global economy, the ability to send and receive SMS messages in different languages will continue to grow.
