Today’s Deal – Honor 6X is $179 on Amazon

Today’s Deal is on the powerful yet budget friendly Honor 6X.  Honor is the sub-brand of Huawei and the 6X is one of their late-2016 models.  I reviewed the phone back in March and it was the first Honor product I’ve reviewed.  I was impressed, especially for the price point.  That price has gone down to $179 on Amazon and that makes it an even better deal.

The Honor 6X measures 150.9 x 76.2 x 8.2 mm or 5.94 x 3.00 x 0.32 inches in old money.  It weighs 162g or 5.71 ounces.  The display on the phone measures 5.5″ and renders a Full HD resolution of 1080 x 1920.  That gives you an approximate pixel-per-inch count of 403.  It has 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, which can be expanded thanks to the MicroSD slot.

Review – Moto Z2 Force is A Force Indeed

The path that Motorola has taken with the Android lineup over the past couple of years has been interesting.  They have produced some great phones like the Google branded Nexus 6 while others like the Moto E lineup have been lackluster at best.  But through late 2016 until now, the company has been hitting its stride and that is powerfully evident with the new Moto Z2 Force.  This 5.5″ phone runs the latest Android Nougat 7.1.1 build and has all the makings of a true hit.  With battery life that is above average, a zippy Snapdragon 835 processor and excellent cameras, it should be on your shortlist of phones to consider as we wind down 2017.

Motorola recently provided a Moto Z2 Force to review (via my work over at Gear Diary) and I have to say, it’s one phone that I’ll be a little sad to depart with when it goes back to them.  Here’s my review.

Review – Huawei P10 – Killer Performance in a Small Package

I’ve been reviewing mobile devices for the better part of 15 years now.  I’m often asked, “What is the best phone to get?”  My answer is always the same:  The phone that works best for you.  For some, that’s iPhones.  For some, that’s Android.  But when it comes to any phone, rarely do you find one that ticks all the boxes when it comes to performance, a solid camera, good battery life and user experience.  I’ve found one of these rare phones in the Huawei P10.  It’s not perfect, but it is close and this 5.1″ phone is once to seriously consider.

I’ve had the opportunity over the past few weeks to use the Huawei P10 as my daily driver and it has not disappointed.  It has the power to get me through the day and the performance to do anything I need it to do – from email, to streaming music and video, to playing a game or two.  It is a device that I have no reservation in recommending.  Yes there are some things to get use to with it, most notably the multi-function fingerprint scanner, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll really unlock this phone.

Today’s Deal – Lenovo Phab 2 Pro with Tango Support Down to $370

Today’s Deal is on the first Project Tango enabled phone, the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro.  Right now you can pick one up in Grey for $370.25 on Amazon.  That’s a healthy saving off the original price of $499.  For those who may not recall what exactly Project Tango is from Google, it is devices and apps that work in augmented reality.  These apps and now the Phab 2 Pro allow you to do thing like measure distances, fly through the solar system and other things all from the device.  A good example is the Lowe’s Vision app for Tango. It allows you to measure a space in your house and virtually put an appliance or other furniture you buy from Lowes in your house.

As for the Phab 2 Pro, you are getting a lot of horsepower in the package from Lenovo, starting with the 6.4″ display that renders 2560 x 1440.  Coupled with this is the Snapdragon 652 octa-core process running at 1.8GHz.

Today’s Deal – The New Moto G5 Plus for $239 on Amazon

Today’s Deal is on the all new Moto G5 Plus.  The phone was announced last week and today is its first day of availability.  You can pick up the Android Nougat running phone with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage for $239 from Amazon.  There are a lot of options on this phone but if you are willing to put up with Amazon ads on the lock screen, you can save a few dollars.

The Moto G5 Plus has a 5.2″ Full HD display rendering at 1024 x 1920.  That gives you a solid PPI count of 424, making it easy on the eyes for long periods of viewing.  It is powered by the Snapdragon 625 processor running all eight cores at 2.0GHz.  As mentioned, the top end configuration has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.  That storage can be expanded up to an additional 256GB thanks to the MicroSD slot.

The phone is sold unlocked on Amazon so it works with various carriers.  A nice benefit is for you Verizon and Sprint customers.  Yes, this phone will work for you as it supports GSM and CDMA.  AT&T and T-Mobile customers, it’s fully compatible for you too.

Review – Honor 6X – Solid Performer at a Great Price

When it comes to mid-market Android phones, there are a huge number of options at under $300.  Most of those devices have compromises of some sort to keep that price point, some of which are painful to overlook.  That’s not so much the case with the Honor 6X.  The follow up to last year’s 5X, the Honor 6X brings a lot of power and features in its 5.5″ frame and has the features that you would expect for this price point.  But it is not perfect and does have some blemishes, most of which will be addressed when this phone sees its impending Android Nougat update.  With that update, there is no reason to overlook the 6X if you are wanting a good sized, mid-range phone.

I’ve been spending the last few weeks with the Honor 6X and without giving away the plot, I don’t have a problem recommending it.  It performs well, has a good camera and plenty of battery power to get you through the day.  Here is my review and thoughts on the latest phone from Honor.

Pre-Ordered LG G6’s Already Being Received Ahead of the April 7th Release

Based on postings on Google+ and reports from other sites, it looks like many of those who pre-ordered the new LG G6 have started to receive their new phones.  The official launch date for the phone here in the United States is April 7th but AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint users are reporting they are already receiving the new phone.  Verizon? Not so much.

Pre-orders for LG’s latest flagship started just last week and if you did pre-order, you would also receive a Google Home too.  Remember that the LG G6 is the first phone to launch with Google Assistant built in outside of Google themselves so the promotion, which goes through orders made until April 30th, makes sense.

Review – Huawei Mate 9 – A Powerful & Impressive Phablet

Huawei, and their junior brand Honor, continue to make strides in the US market.  The Chinese manufacture has rolled out several phones and tablets over the past year and one of the latest, the Huawei Mate 9, is nothing short of impressive.  The 5.9″ phablet has a stunning display, powerful specs and is running the all new EMUI 5.0, Huawei’s user interface based on Android Nougat 7.0.  Couple this with a dual-camera configuration that leverages Leica optics and a beefy 4000mAh battery, you end up with a device that not only can handle your mobile computing needs but can take some seriously impressive photos while lasting you all day.  It is a pretty complete package and a far cry better than the 2015 Mate 8 (which wasn’t all that bad).

I recently had an opportunity to use the Mate 9 and I’m sold.  If you are in the market for a larger device that can meet your phone and small tablet needs, this phablet should be on your shortlist.  Here’s my review of the Huawei Mate 9.
