AT&T Releases June Android Security Update for The Galaxy Note 4

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 continues to get incremental updates from both Samsung directly and carriers here in the United States.  AT&T has started rolling out updated firmware version N910AUCS2EQF1 which is fundamentally the June Android Security update that was released by Google earlier this month.  In fact, only security updates are listed in the release notes on the AT&T site for the device.

This update does not update the device to Android Nougat, an update that is likely never to happen officially given the age of the device and the expected release of the Note 8 this summer.  Indeed, it is because of the debacle of the Note 7 that the 4 is still getting regular updates more-or-less.

Unlocked Galaxy Note 4 Getting The May 2017 Security Update

Samsung has begun rolling out the May 2017 Android Security update for the venerable Galaxy Note 4 and Note 4 Edge.  The update doesn’t contain any new features for the 2014 devices but will bring them up to the latest security patch for those still using it.  Both phones are running Android Marshmallow and it is highly unlikely they will ever see Nougat despite their extended support after the Note7 debacle.

The update weighs in at 345MB and it is recommended that you download the OTA update via Wi-Fi.  Once you have it downloaded, the install process will take about 10 minutes to complete and will require a reboot of the device.

AT&T Just Now Rolling Out The February Android Security Update to Some Devices

With the March Android Security Update rolling out, February’s update is just now being rolled out by AT&T to some Samsung devices.  The update for the Galaxy Note 4, Note 5 and S5 Active are just now hitting customers. The updates themselves are quite small, under 200MB, and only contain the security update changes & fixes.  To put things into perspective, T-Mobile released the February Android Security Update for the Note 5 on their network on February 1st, the day the patch was released.

The challenge of upgrades and security patches is a well trodden road that we don’t need to visit yet again.  But it speaks volumes of the problem facing the platform when one carrier is releasing a security patch some 5 weeks after it was originally released.

The update for these devices shouldn’t take long to download given their size.  Once you have the download completed, your will need to reboot your device to apply the update which, all in, should take about 20 minutes to get done.  For reference, the build numbers for the updates are as follows:

  • Galaxy Note 4 – MMB29M.N910AUCS2EPK4
  • Galaxy Note 5 – MMB29K.N920AUCS4CQB2
  • Galaxy S5 Active  – MMB29M.G870AUCS2DPK5

Unless you just absolutely have to do so, I strongly encourage readers to avoid carrier locked devices from any carrier.  Updates tend to be much slower from carriers while unlocked devices from manufactures, as a general rule, will get updates faster.  That doesn’t always hold 100% true but close enough.  Obviously devices from Google like the Pixel and Nexus phones get updates the quickest.

Today’s Deal – Samsung Galaxy Note 4 for $185 on eBay

Today’s Deal is on the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and it is a good one.  Right now over at eBay you can pick up the unlocked version of the phone with 32GB of built-in storage for $184.99 while supplies last.  It is available in black only and it is a manufacture reconditioned unit but for what this phone offers, at this price it is a great deal.  In case you don’t remember all of the specs on this 5.7″ phablet, here is a quick run down.  The 5.7″ display renders at 1440 x 2560 so you get about 518 ppi.  It is powered by the Snapdragon 805 quad-core processor running at 2.7GHz, has 3GB of RAM and built-in 32GB of storage.  You can expand that storage up to an additional 256GB with the MicroSD slot.

AT&T Updates The Galaxy Note 4 and Note Edge – To Marshmallow

As a general rule, I try not to pick on any one particular carrier or device because whichever they happen to be, meets the need for some of the Android faithful.  But seriously AT&T, you need to get your act together.  Yesterday the carrier began rolling out the Android Marshmallow update for the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and the Note Edge on their network.  That is nearly three months after the last carrier in the US (T-Mobile) updated the device on their network, six months after the first updates were done by Sprint and yes, a year after Marshmallow was released by Google.  AT&T is notoriously slow at getting updates out to their devices (which isn’t helped in this case as Samsung is slow as well) and this may well be one of the best cases.

Okay, enough complaining.  It’s here and that’s the good news.

T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Sees Marshmallow Update Arrive

Following in the footsteps of Verizon, T-Mobile has now released the Android Marshmallow update for the Galaxy Note 4 on the carrier’s network.  The update brings Android 6.0.1 to the Note 4 as well the June security update.  It is about as fresh a version of Android as you can get.  The update is a hefty 1.5GB so you will certainly have to be on Wi-Fi in order to download it.  Once you do have it downloaded, you can expect a 20-30 minute install time and reboot of your device.  As always, I recommend you make sure that you have any local documents or photos backed up to the cloud or your PC prior to starting the update – just in case.

Galaxy Note 4 on Verizon Sees The June Security Update Roll Out

For those of you who are Verizon customers who have the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, take a few minutes to check your phone for updates.  Verizon has started rolling out the June Android security update to the device and given it is a sub-200MB download, it should be available to pretty much everyone at this point.  The updated build is version MMB29M.N910VVRU2CPF3 for those keeping score at home.
