Lumia Denim Begins UK Rollout on O2

The long rollout of Lumia Denim on Windows Phone continues but is finally starting to gain some carrier steam.  UK provider O2 has released the latest update for the Lumia 635, Lumia 930 and Lumia 1520 on their network.  For those of you who are on O2 and have these devices, you can go to Settings>phone update on your device to check for the update if it has not already been pushed down to you.

The news of O2 rolling out Lumia Denim is welcome as more carriers globally are starting to roll it out after it was released in December.  Just last week UK’s EE network released the update for their customers using the Lumia 930 as did Brazil’s TIM network.  As for North American carriers, the wait continues.

As a reminder, you can read my Guide to Lumia Denim and my Lumia Denim Rollout Guide for more detailed information on the release and the rollout process.

Verizon has suggested that the Lumia Icon (the 930 in disguise) will be getting the Lumia Denim update soon while AT&T has been mum on when Lumia 635, Lumia 1020 and Lumia 1520 owners on their network can expect to

see the update.  T-Mobile and Sprint have said the updates are coming but have not given a timeline yet.

The Lumia 830 on AT&T is already running Lumia Denim.

Microsoft has suggested that the carrier dependent rollouts will change under Windows 10 but have not been clearly defined as to how this will change.  Ultimately both Microsoft and Google face the same problem when rolling out major updates where the carriers decide when or if that update will go to certain devices on their network.  By contrast, Apple controls the rollout of updates to iOS themselves which makes for a smoother user upgrade experience and gets the latest features into their hands quicker.  Hopefully Microsoft will do the same under Windows 10.

If you have upgraded your O2 network Lumia, leave a comment or tweet me to let me know how the upgrade went and if it is working smoothly for you.
