NOAA Hi-Def Radar for Windows Updated With Live Tile Support

The NOAA Hi-Def Radar app for Windows has received a nice update today, bringing amongst other improvements Live Tile support to your Windows 8.1 Start screen.  The update, version 1.1.0.13 for those keeping score at home, has a lot of fixes and improvement throughout including a nagging issue with the Bing map authentication.  It seems that Weathersphere, the developer of the app, got that sorted out along with other general bug fixes and improvements.

The biggest change in this update to the NOAA Hi-Def Radar app is the support of Live Tiles.  Now you can get live weather radar information on your Windows 8.1 Start screen at any time and that weather information can be based on your current location or can be a location of your choice.  Like Live Tiles on Windows Phone, the idea here is to give you quick information without having to

actually open the app.  This update makes that possible and it is quite handy (as I personally wait for another round of snow today here in Denver).

In addition to the Live Tile support, NOAA Hi-Def Radar also has a new layer on the radar maps for weather alert polygons.  When these are tapped, users will see the national weather service alert information for that particular alert.  Like other layers in the app, this can be turned off or on as you chose.

The one thing to keep in mind about the app is that it is that it is US centric and will only provide you weather radar information in the 50 states along with Puerto Rico and Guam, two US Territories.  Also keep in mind if that you are in a very high altitude location like Vale, Colorado, accuracy may be hit-or-miss due to the high mountains but frankly every weather app struggles with this in the Rockies.

Also note that as of this post the version of this app for Windows Phone had not been updated.  I have however put a link below for you to download it.  As it is a Universal app in the Windows 8.1 world, you get free access to the that version of the app too.

The NOAA Hi-Def Radar app is $1.99 and this update is now live in the Windows Store.
