Sony Announces The Xperia M5

Following weeks of rumors and speculation, Sony has announced today the new Xperia M5 Android phone.  The newest offering from Sony sports an impressive set of specifications including a 21MP rear camera and a 13MP front camera.  The 5″ display device will be powered by the 64-bit MediaTek Helio X10 Octa-core processor running at 2.0 GHz and will have 3GB of RAM which should make this phone quite snappy. It will also be running Android 5.0 (Lollipop) and interestingly, is waterproof.

While no firm release date was provided, we can expect to see the Xperia M5 hit select markets this month.

A lot of the focus of the Xperia M5, no pun intended, is around the cameras built into the device.  The rear facing camera is a 21MP uses what Sony calls a hybrid auto-focus, combining passive and contrast focusing techniques for faster and more reliable focusing, especially in low light situations.  The camera is a f/2.2 that supports 4K video recording with image stabilizer and HDR.  It also has what Sony calls 5x Clear View zooming which is a digitally enhanced zoom instead of an optical zoom.  The camera in the Xperia M5 also has auto scene detection for better lighting and

color accuracy. The front camera is a 13MP unit that has various modes for improving selfies and that includes the ability to shoot those in HDR.

Beyond the camera, the Xperia M5 has a lot of very nice specs that should make everyone take a look.  Here are the highlights.

  • 64-bit MediaTek Helio X10 Octa-core processor (2.0 GHz)
  • 3GB RAM
  • 5″ IPS HD display (1920×1080 pixels)
  • 2600 mAh
  • Waterproof and dustproof design (you can get it wet but cannot submerge it)

Interestingly, no mention in the release from Sony indicates what the storage amount on board for the Xperia M5 will be on release nor has a firm price been released.  Sony is positioning it as a mid-range phone so my estimate would be somewhere between $400-500 US but that’s a guess I fully admit.

You can find out more information about the Xperia M5 on the Sony Mobile website.
