Sony Announces The Xperia X Series

I will admit that these are the kinds of Press Release that make me a little crazy.  Sony at MWC today announced the new Xperia X series, a lineup of new Android phones that includes three new devices, the Xperia X, Xperia X Performance and Xperia XA, but there were scarcely any details given about the devices.  While the Xperia X Peformance will run a Snapdragon 802 processor and has a 5″ display, there is virtually nothing else known about these devices.  I’m sure as the day progresses we will get more details but to not have the basics in the Presser is… aye.

Right, so where is what is known.  It is a series of 3 devices, the entry level one running on the Snapdragon 650 processor and that Sony is primarily focusing on battery life, camera performance and connected devices.  On the camera front, the company has pulled a lot of technology from their series of A cameras into these devices to give you things such as Predictive Hybrid focus for improved speed and performance in the camera.  On the battery front, Sony is claiming you will get 2 days of battery life thanks to battery management software built into the devices.

Along with the devices, Sony has also announced an Xperia Ear, a NFC or Bluetooth ear piece that is designed to give you natural language access to apps and services on your phone.

Xperia Ear is a next-generation wireless ear-piece that brings a new way of communicating, without compromising on enjoying the world around you. It provides you with useful information such as your schedule, weather and the latest news to keep you up-to-date on the go. Powered by Sony’s voice technology, it responds to verbal commands, so you can ask it to make a call, perform an internet search, dictate a message or navigate to a certain location. It enables you to face forward and get things done, for a convenient hands-free experience.

Also, Sony has announced the Xperia Eye.

Xperia Eye is a conceptual vision for an ultra compact, wearable wide-angle lens camera – with the flexibility to be easily attached to clothing or worn around the neck. It represents a proof-of-concept exploration to bring Sony’s acclaimed camera and sensing technology to its smallest ever form-factor – featuring a 360-degree spherical lens for a natural field of view. Its intelligent shutter technology will use facial and voice detection to capture images, allowing you to enjoy and preserve life’s moments without thinking about the technology.

Pricing and global availability of the new Xperia X series isn’t known right now but I suspect more details will come throughout the week at MWC.
