OneDrive Update Brings Improved Photo Sync to Android

Microsoft has released an update to OneDrive, their cloud storage app & service, for Android that brings a much improved photo sync capability to your phone or tablet.  The updated version is build 3.9.1 for those keeping score at home and it is available now in the Google Play Store.  The entire update seemingly is focused on helping you make sure that the photos you have on your device get sync’d up, not just those you take with your phone’s camera.  Let me explain.

If you use a photo editing app, chances are that the app you use creates its own folder within your Photos folder where your edited photos are stored (not all do this but a lot of them do).  For example, I use Screener for all of the screenshots you see here on the site.  When I create a screenshot, the app creates its own directory where they are stored.  At this point I have to manually push that screenshot to OneDrive.  That is where this new version of the app comes into play.  Now I can tell the app to sync photos in my Screener folder and any screenshot I create will be

automatically sync’d with my OneDrive service – which in turn means it is sync’d with my PC.  All I have to do it tell OneDrive which folders I want to sync automatically (and I can change my mind later of course).

The other big update in this new build has to do with SD cards.  Now when you plug in a SD card into your phone and it has photos on them, you can have OneDrive automatically upload those photos for you too.  When you pop in the card, you’ll be prompted by the app in the Notification shade of the card being there and if you want to sync it with OneDrive.  Tap yes and that’s it. The sync happens behind the scenes for you so you have the photos tucked away in the cloud as well as on the card.

This latest update to OneDrive is in the Google Play Store now. If you haven’t tried the service and are looking for a cloud-based storage solution, give it a go and see what you think.  New users can try it out for free and you get 5GB of free storage.  If you have an Office 365 account, you get 1TB of storage free.
