Chrome OS Update Brings Improved Monitor Support

Google has just released an updated build of Chrome OS for all devices running on the platform.  The update build is version 51.0.2704.79 (Platform version: 8172.47.0) for those keeping score at home.  On some devices the platform version will end in .1 or .2 so keep that in mind but the main thing you want to look for is the 51.0.2704 build.  As usual, there are a significant number of updates and security improvements made to the OS but there is also a significant improvement when it comes to the handling of external monitors connected to your Chrome-based devices.

First, Chrome OS now supports 3+ displays at once.  While most users will never need this many monitors, it is an option now.  This is great for the platform as it continues to push into the SMB

and low end enterprise space where multi-monitor usage is more common.  The second improvement around monitors comes in the support of ICC profiles.  If your monitor supports ICC profiles and settings, Chrome OS can now automatically calibrate those monitors.

This latest update to the OS is rolling out now and should be coming to all devices over the course of the next day or two.  My HP Chromebook 11 G4 has already received the update as I forced the issue by going to Settings>About Chrome OS and checking for an update manually.
