At IFA in Berlin this morning, Sony pulled back the covers on the all new Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact. This 4.6″ phone, running on Android Oreo, is the follow up device for last year’s Xperia X Compact. That phone was one of the best I reviewed for last year and it is great to see Sony continuing the compact phone in this day of phablets.
The new Xperia XZ1 Compact has a 4.6″ full HD display (1920 x 1080) and is powered by the Snapdragon 835 SoC and coupled with the Adreno 540 GPU. It has 4GB of RAM and has 64GB of storage. That storage can be expanded up to an additional 256GB thanks to the MicroSD slot.
As for cameras, the Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact follows up last year’s X Compact well. It has a 19MP rear camera that uses Sony’s SteadyShot for image stabilization. The front facing camera is an 8MP shooter that has 120° wide-angle to capture the most in your selfies.
The phone is IP68 rated against water and dust intrusion, is charged via the USB-C port and has a 2700mAh battery built-in. The phone also has a built-in fingerprint scanner but keep in mind, due to legal restrictions, it will not be enabled on the US model.
As for colors, there will be four available:
- Black
- Warm Silver
- Moonlight Blue
- Venus Pink
As for availability, that will start in September. The XZ1 Compact will be $599 and will be available from Amazon & Best Buy here in the United States. Interestingly, the phone will support T-Mobile Wi-Fi Calling out of the box and doesn’t require that you have the phone locked to the carrier.
