Google has released this month’s Android Distribution Report and the latest version of the platform has finally made its debut. Android Oreo accounted for .2% of the traffic to the Google Play Store for the seven day period ending October 2, 2017. It was only one of two versions of Android that gained in the distribution report, joined by Android Nougat.
Nougat saw a 2% jump over the September report, accounting for 17.8% of the traffic to the Play Store. All of the others either had no change or saw drops in usage.
Android Lollipop, version 5.x, saw the biggest drop at 1.1% over September. That takes it down to 27.7% but it remains the 2nd most popular version of Android still out there. Here is the complete rundown:

- Android Ice Cream Sandwich – .6% (no change)
- Android Jelly Bean – 6.6% (-.3%)
- Android KitKat – 14.5% (-.6%)
- Android Lollipop – 27.7%(-1.1%)
- Android Marshmallow – 32% (-.2%)
- Android Nougat – 17.8% (+2%)
Both Gingerbread and Ice Cream Sandwich have somewhat been on “death watch” these past few months as they were expected to disappear this summer. Somehow, despite their APIs being retired, they are still holding on.
It is good to see Oreo finally make the report after being out for nearly 2 months. With the upcoming releases from Google, Huawei and the recent releases of the Samsung Note8 and LG V30, we should see Android 8.0 gain some ground over the last quarter of 2017.
