Google News App Finally Arrives in the Play Store

After being announced last week at Google I/O, the new Google News app is now available in both the Google Play Store for Android users as well as Apple’s App Store for iPhone users.  While the app makes the AI-driven news app available, the Google News site is still hasn’t been updated at the time of this posting.

As you may recall, the new Google News app has an entirely new look and feel, drawing heavily on Material Design for its overall look with lots of visual content for news articles.  It is a far cry from the nearly all text-based version of the old News app.

Like before, the app provides you news stores and headlines from sources you select and curated sources.  You can also get your local news and can indicate your favorite subjects or sources to help personalize the news that you get from the app.  Also new in the News app is Newsstand where you will find any magazine subscriptions you have through the Play Store.  This means that eventually Google will stop supporting and updating the Google Play Newsstand app.

As for the AI part of the app, that comes down to you.  Essentially, when you first fire up the app, it will use the knowledge that Google already has about you and provide content that it thinks you will be interested in seeing.  As you tap articles, read them and watch content within the app, the AI will learn more precisely your preferences and will over time provide more content aimed at your likings.  Like so many other AI driven apps from Google, the more you use it, the better it will get at knowing you and your preferences.

To download the app for Android, just head over to the Play Store.
