Project Crostini Expanded to Another 18 Chromebooks

If there was any doubt that Google is planning to make Linux available on a wide range of Chromebooks, a find by XDA Developers should put them to rest.  The code snippet found in a Chromium commit has added 18 new Apollo Lake powered Chromebooks to Project Crostini, the codename for the project to add Linux to Chrome OS.

The new additions are Chromebooks from the likes of Acer, Dell, and Lenovo, offering a much broader group of devices that will be able to run Linux and, notably, not the upper end of processing power.

Here is the complete list of the new Chromebooks that support Project Crostini:

  • Lenovo Thinkpad 11e Chromebook / Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 11e Chromebook
  • Lenovo 500e Chromebook
  • Lenovo 100e Chromebook
  • Acer Chromebook Spin 11 R751T
  • Acer Chromebook 15 CB515-1HT/1H
  • Acer Chromebook 11 (C732, C732T, C732L & C732LT )
  • Acer Chromebook 11 (CB311-8H & CB311-8HT)
  • Acer Chromebook Spin 11 (CP311-1H & CP311-1HN)
  • ASUS Chromebook Flip C213SA
  • Dell Chromebook 11 5190
  • Dell Chromebook 11 2-in-1 5190

While the new Chromebooks are in the mix now as far as Linux is concerned, you can still only gain support by having your Chromebook in the Canary or Dev channel.  As Kevin Tofel over at About Chromebooks found last week, support in the Beta and Stable Channels has been pushed back to Chrome 69.
