Android Wear Update Brings Improved Connection Between Your Watch & Phone

The latest update to Android Wear is rolling out in the Google Play Store, bringing with it improved connectivity between your watch and your phone.  The updated build is version 1.5 for those keeping score at home and the new feature essentially takes the Wear app and allows you to turn off the battery optimization so your phone communicates with your watch on a more consistent basis. In other words, it forces the app to stay connected to your watch even if your phone is in Doze mode.

Let me explain.

1st Generation Moto 360 Seeing Marshmallow Today

Multiple owners of the 1st generation of the Moto 360 are starting to see Android Marshmallow show up on their smartwatches today and I am one of them.  The update, which has been rolling out to other smartwatches recently, seems to have had the trigger pulled for one of the first and popular Android Wear devices with users reporting to Phandroid and Reddit that they are seeing the update.

Google Play Music Update Brings Auto Download Feature

The Google Play Music app has been updated today for Android devices and while it is mostly a bug fix release, there are a few new features that are worth a mention.  This new build is verion 6.1.2115T for those keeping score at home and it is rolling out to the Google Play Store now.  If you have the app installed then you should expect to see the OTA update for it anytime over the next couple of days.

As far as new features in this update, the first thing you will notice is a completely revamped Settings menu.  Things are generally much more organized into sections with this update and it is a bit easier to see all of your settings without having to tap to change a particular setting in most cases.  Functionally there isn’t much different other than the new Auto-offline feature which I will discuss after the break but I find the new Settings to be a bit easier to figure out what to adjust in Google Play Music.

Bits Watch Face Gets A Major Update

When Android Wear 1.3 was announced a few weeks back, one of the key new features were interactive watch faces.  The first such face, Bits Watch Face, offers a great cluster view of the things that are important to you and frankly, is my personal favorite interactive face.  Now Bits Watch Face has seen its first major update and it is certainly qualifies as major.  The update is build 1.1.0 for those keeping score at home and brings a host of bug fixes and feature enhancements.  The update is free but remember, if by chance you have not seen Android Wear 1.3 hit your smartwatch, the interactive nature of this watch face or any other won’t work.

Android Wear Launched for iOS

Google has officially launched Android Wear for iOS, bringing the option of Android based smartwatches to iPhone users.  The release was announced on the official Google Blog and for those who have an iPhone running iOS 8.2 or higher, you now can sync your LG Watch Urbane with your iPhone and get all the features and functionality that you can on an Android phone.  It’s a big move for Google and it gives iOS users an alternative to the AppleWatch.

Interestingly, the integration of Android Wear and iOS is currently only available on the LG Watch Urbane which means that users of other devices won’t be able to sync up with an iPhone.  Google states in the post that further watches will support iOS.
