Android Messages for Web Now Fully Deployed According to Google

After trickling out over the course of the past week or so, Android Messages for web has now fully been deployed according to Google’s Justin Uberti.  The Principle Engineer for Google took to Twitter early this morning to make the announcement.

Now that it is fully deployed, everyone using Messages should be able to send text messages from their browser on their PC, Mac, or Chromebook without having to actually touch their phones.

Google Photos Adds Love Story Auto Creation Movie Feature

Google has added a new Love Story auto movie creation feature in the latest update to Google Photos.  Like the other auto created movies, the Love Story feature is driven by Google Assistant which is deeply integrated into Photos.  The update to bring this new feature is a combination of an app update, to version 3.23.0.200631752 for those keeping score at home, and a cloud-side update that is pushed to this updated app version.

To get to the new Love Story feature, open up Google Photos then use the overflow menu (three vertical dots) to create a new movie.  There you will see all of the different auto generated movie options along with the new Love Story.

Google Camera Update Brings Google Lens Integration on Pixel Phones

A new update to the Google Camera app is making its way out in the wild today, bringing integration with Google Lens to Google Nexus and Pixel phones.  The updated version is 5.2.025 for those keeping score at home.

At Google I/O, the Mountain View company indicated that devices that were compatible with the Google camera app would be getting Google Lens integration in the app.  To date, that has rolled out for several manufactures like Sony, Motorola and OnePlus but not on Google’s own devices.

Microsoft Edge for Android Passes 5 Million Downloads

Microsoft Edge for Android, the Redmond company’s browser for the platform, has hit a significant milestone in the Google Play Store.  It has now been downloaded over 5 million times according to the app’s store listing.  Given how new Edge for Android is – just 8 months old – hitting the 5 million download threshold is something to note indeed.

While Microsoft Edge is mainly aimed at Windows 10 users who want to have a continuous browser experience on their phone, it is actually a powerful browser alternative for Android users that has continued to evolve rapidly as Microsoft continually tweaks on it, much like they do the rest of their Android portfolio.

Warner Bros Sued By Bethesda Over Westworld Game

Last week the new Westworld game landed for both Android and iOS.  I, like everyone who posted an announcement about the game, noted how similar it looked and played to Bethesda Softworks’ Fallout Shelter.  Well, it seems that Bethesda thinks so too and has filed a lawsuit against Warner Bros and Behaviour Interactive who held develop the game.

In a lawsuit filed on Friday, Bethesda claims that the game blatantly copies Fallout Shelter, down to the bugs in the game.  The key in all of this is Behaviour Interactive who was under contract with Bethesda back in 2014 to help produce Fallout Shelter, which was released in 2015.  The lawsuit claims that they used code and other information to create the Westworld game.

Microsoft Teams Update Brings Support for In-Meeting Video Sharing

The latest update to Microsoft Teams for Android has made its way into the Play Store, bringing several improvements and updates to the meeting and messaging app.  The update is version 1416/1.0.0.2018062101 for those keeping score at home or who like version number BINGO!

The headline new feature is the ability to share a video while you are in a meeting.  Sharing of content in Teams hasn’t been much of an issue to this point, especially Office content like Word docs and the like.  But you couldn’t share a video that you had on your phone while in a meeting.  That changes with this update as you can now share video content while in your call directly from your phone.

LineageOS 15.1 Brings Android Oreo 8.1 to The OnePlus One

When the OnePlus One, the first phone from OnePlus, was released back in 2014, it was an almost instant hit.  The price for what you got in the phone was hard to beat and it had almost a cult-like following from fans.  But, like all manufactures, OnePlus eventually dropped support for the phone as new models were released.  In other words, there was no chance it would ever see Android Oreo 8.1.

Fast forward to 2018 and the OnePlus One lives on.  LineageOS, the company that rose from the ashes of CyanogenMod (which is what was originally running on the OnePlus One ironically), has just added support of Android Oreo 8.1 for the OPO along with a handful of other devices.  The support comes to LineageOS 15.1, the build which is based on Oreo 8.1.

Microsoft Bing Gains Visual Search Functionality in Latest Update

Microsoft has updated the Microsoft Bing search app for Android and iOS, bringing a new visual search functionality to it.  The feature works very similar to Google Lens (albeit not real time) by allow you to snap a photo of an object, bar code or a photo from your phone to identify objects in it.

The feature is also part of Microsoft Launcher and Microsoft Edge for Android with the feature coming to Edge for iOS shortly.
