With virtually nothing other than the name revealed, Nintendo has Tweeted that a new Mario Kart game is heading to mobile devices sometime this year.  Mario Kart Tour will be the name of the mobile centric game and it can only be assumed that, like Super Mario Run, it will be a unique, mobile twist on a classic game.

Obviously, a 13 month window to get an app out is a huge window but clearly Nintendo was wanting to keep expectations low on timing of the release, citing their financial year end of March 2019.

A day earlier than expected, Super Mario Run is now available to download and install on your Android devices.  The endless runner style game has been exclusive to iOS since it was released in December last year with some 50 million downloads on that platform.  With the release of the game on Android, that’s likely to easily double in just a few weeks time.

In the game, you are the ever popular Mario and you are doing what you do best:  Collecting coins and progressing your way through six worlds in the game.  The way gameplay works is that you can only move forward, up or down so no going back to get coins you missed for example.  The object of the game is to collect as many coins as you can before get to the flagpole at the end of the level before time runs out.  Sound familiar? Oh, and yes you still can save Princess Peach and defeat Bowser too.  There are two other game play modes as well to keep you entertained.

Although it is still an exclusive for iOS users, Super Mario Run looks to be coming to Android soon.  In the Google Play Store you will now find a listing for the new game as well as the ability to pre-register for it.  Pre-registering will assure that you get a notification on your phone when the game is available, likely sometime this quarter.  You will then be able to go to the store to purchase it and install it.

As for the game itself, Nintendo describes game play as…

In this game, Mario constantly moves forward through the courses while you use a variety of jumps to navigate. Mario will behave differently depending on the timing of your taps, so it’s up to you to show off particularly smooth moves, gather coins, and reach the goal.

The announcement of the game back in October at an Apple event was one of the highlights for that event and one that got a lot of people excited to see a classic video game, at least in character, come to mobile devices.

Good news for all you teens of the 80’s (Clinton raises his hand) – Super Mario Run is coming to Android.  When?  Oh who knows but it is coming eventually.

In case you missed it, the side runner game was announced yesterday by Nintendo for iOS and it will be available on that platform later this year.  When exactly isn’t clear but it will for sure be in time for the holiday season.  According to the site Kotaku, Nintendo has confirmed they will be making the game available for Android at some point in the future.

Nintendo tells Kotaku: “We do intend to release the game on Android devices at some point in the future.”

Now when that future is exactly is unclear but it almost certainly will be 2017.
