Just a day after a surprising sixth beta build of Chrome 67 was released for the Chrome OS Beta Channel, the latest version of the platform has now been promoted to the Chrome OS Stable Channel. The build, 67.0.3396.78 (Platform version: 10575.54.0), is the exact same build that was the final beta yesterday.
The update brings a laundry list of improvements, features and fixes to the platform which I’ve listed after the break. Some of these features, like Progressive Web App support, is a mirror of what is available on the desktop browsers for Windows and MacOS.
Here are the new features in this new update to the platform:
- Android Debug Bridge support over USB in developer mode
- Progressive Web Apps can now be installed as stand-alone apps
- Extend Chrome page zoom to Google Play Apps
- Visual update for ext4 filesystem migration
- Feedback reports on sign-in screen
- Cleaner improved Bluetooth list
- Touchable material 2.0 Chrome for tablet devices
- Select-to-Speak ability to select specific text to be read aloud
- Inline touchable folders in launcher
- Split Screen support in Tablet mode
- Support for zipping files on Drive via the Files app
- Power menu shortcuts when holding the power button
- Detachable base swap detection
In addition to these new features, more Site Isolation support is rolling out with this update to more Chromebooks to add additional security to your Chromebook when surfing around.
While the update has been released, it is going to take a few days to get to everyone. Looking at the Omaha Proxy for this post, the database for Chrome OS Stable Channel still shows Chrome 66 as the most current version. That means it hasn’t begun rolling out at all. Once the database is updated, then it will start trickling out to device.
