OnePlus 2 Goes Invite Free Starting December 5

After using an invitation system on all three of their devices, OnePlus has announced that starting Saturday, December 5th, an invite will no longer be required to purchase a OnePlus 2, the companies 2016 flagship device.  The news came via the OnePlus forums and it certainly welcome news.  As I put in my article on why the OnePlus 2 needed to be successful for the company, I pointed out that the invite system had to go smoother than it did with the OnePlus One. It didn’t really and in fact many people found it quite frustration.  I get it though as it was a great way for the company to determine their production needs.  That, unfortunately and by their own admission, messed up (again) and that has not helped the nearly 2 year old startup phone company.

The OnePlus 2 has had good reviews and most users seem to be very pleased with the device.  For a 3GB RAM/64GB Storage device at only $389, it is a great value and should make everyone’s short list of device to consider for the holidays.  One key feature to be aware of however is the lack of NFC, something the still invite-only OnePlus X does have built in.

OnePlus 2 Available Black Friday With No Invite

If you have been craving a OnePlus 2 but haven’t got your hands on an invite, this week could be your week.  The Chinese manufacture has taken to Twitter to let everyone know that starting November 27th through the 30th you can order a OnePlus 2 without having an invitation.  They are terming it as “Unlimited” and fundamentally, it speaks volumes to the challenge that OnePlus has created for itself with their invitation system.

Like the OnePlus One, the company rolled out an invitation purchasing system for the OnePlus 2 announced this summer.  When I wrote a post outlining what the company needed to do to make this new flagship successful, I pointed out that a key to the success would be a smarter and far smoother roll out of this invitation system for this new device.  It has been anything but smooth and frankly, given the lack of some key features of the OnePlus 2, sales have not been exactly stellar. So to make up for it in a way, they are suspending the invite system for Black Friday so you can get your hands on one of these devices without having to wait for an invite.

No indication on how long you will have to wait for the device however.

OnePlus One & OnePlus 2 to Get Android Marshmallow Early Next Year

OnePlus has committed in their user forums that they will have an Android Marshmallow build for their last two flagship devices in the first quarter of 2016. The news is certainly good for owners of the OnePlus One and OnePlus 2 as to this point it has remained somewhat of a mystery if these devices would ever get beyond Lollipop.

The biggest question for most was if the OnePlus One, the company’s original phone, would be receiving the update. That was cleared up in the post by Carl Pei

For the OnePlus One, Cyanogen OS will be updating to Marshmallow in the first quarter of 2016. We created a community build of OxygenOS for the OnePlus One, but this isn’t what the product officially ships with. We will be updating the community build of OxygenOS for the OnePlus One when time allows.

So in the case of the One, Android Marshmallow is essentially coming from Cyanogen and not OnePlus themselves.

OnePlus Closing OnePlus 2 Reservations This Month

OnePlus has announced that on October 22nd they will be closing down and locking the OnePlus 2 invite program.  If you want to get on the invite list, now is the time to do it.  The company stated that the reason for the closure was to try to tackle the some 5 million invite holders that are out there.  As they say, “While we appreciate all your support and enthusiasm all things must come to an end eventually. And so, it is time for us to sunset the reservation list, and start fulfilling it.

The news will come as good news for those who are on the reservation list and still haven’t had their device ship while those who have been thinking of getting the latest flagship from the company have been given a timeline on when they can jump in on the action.  The bottom line is if you aren’t on the list come October 22nd, you will have to get invited from an existing OnePlus 2 owner.  Those already on the list will stay on the list & your position will be locked after the 22nd.

OnePlus 2 Open Sale Coming Monday October 12th

For those of you who are waiting for your invite to come up to order a OnePlus 2, there is good news coming on Monday, October 12th.  For one hour on Monday, OnePlus will have an open sale on the OnePlus 2, the latest offering from the company.  Orders are limited to 2 devices in that hour long sale (although there is no mention of limits to orders you can place) and the sale does not require you have an invitation.  In fact, be clear on this folks:  The price won’t be discounted.  You are just getting the opportunity to buy the OnePlus 2 instead of waiting in the invite queue.

OnePlus Starts Rolling Out OxygenOS 2.1 To The OnePlus 2

OnePlus has started rolling out a significant update to the homegrown OxygenOS that is on the OnePlus 2.  The 2.1 update is starting to roll out to a small number today and will generally start rolling out in earnest tomorrow assuming there are no issues.  If you aren’t familiar with it, OxygenOS is the self built Android version that comes stock on the OnePlus 2.  They have moved away from Cyanogen so they can control things a bit better but they will still be supporting Cyanogen on the OnePlus One.

Download The OnePlus 2 Wallpapers

Over the weekend I posted all of the wallpapers for the new Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and S6 edge+ here on the site.  Today I’ve managed to get all of the wallpapers that are shipping with the new OnePlus 2 and have uploaded them for everyone to download and enjoy on their devices.

OnePlus 2 Launch In US and Canada Delayed

For those of you patiently-impatiently-patiently waiting for the OnePlus 2 here in the United States and Canada, your wait just got a little longer.  In their forums today, OnePlus confirmed that the release of their latest flagship phone has been delayed by 2-3 weeks.

The production of the OnePlus 2 is in full swing and we’re excited to get the OnePlus 2 in your hands. However we do want to tell our users in North America that due to production schedules, shipping to the States and Canada will commence 2-3 weeks after shipments to Europe.

The news will certainly be disappointing to those who are waiting to buy the phone.
