Google Releases The January Android Security Update Patches

Google has released the January 2018 Android Security Update patches for the Google Nexus and Pixel lineup of devices.  Normally the patches are released on the first Monday of the first full week in any given month.  Given that yesterday was New Years Day and a holiday, it was delayed until today.

Like previous Android Security Update patches, there are two that have been released.  The first patch is dated January 1 and primarily focuses on core Android fixes and addressing security vulnerabilities.  In this patch there are a total of 20 fixes included, four of which are considered critical fixes.

Apps to Help You Have a Healthier 2018

As we roll the calendar forward to 2018, many of us will be looking to the new year as a chance to start living a healthier lifestyle.  In fact, “weight loss” and “exercise” are among the most common new year resolutions that people set for themselves.  It is said that it takes 3 weeks of doing something before it becomes a habit which makes the month of January critical for the success of your goals or resolutions.

For me, living a healthier lifestyle started in June 2009.  At the time was weighed in at 285 lbs (129 kilos) and was making every poor food and exercise decision you could make.  Fast forward to December 2009 and I was 210 lbs.  As of January 1, 2018, I tipped the scales at 199 lbs.  That’s nearly 10 lbs over my ideal weight of 190 lbs but now you know one of my goals for the new year.

Fortunately we live in the future.  There are dozens of apps out there to help you achieve these healthy goals both for Android and for iPhone but like so many things, it is a question of which one to use.  That’s where this article tries to help.  I’ve compiled a list of apps that I use to help me maintain my diet and overall health.  This is by no means an exhaustive list nor am I suggesting that these are the best of the best.  These are the apps that work for me and they have worked a long time in some cases.  Hopefully they will do the same for you.

Lenovo Yoga Book Update Brings Stability Improvements

A new firmware update is rolling out for the Lenovo Yoga Book that users will want to pick up when they can.  The update brings some much needed stability improvements to the ultra thin 2-in-1 Android tablet including fixing some random crash issues.

The new build is version YB1-X90F_171013 for those keeping score at home.  It is a 300MB download and takes about 10 minutes to get installed.  The Android Security Update patch is incremented up to the August 2017 level which isn’t great but better than nothing I suppose.

The biggest improvements however is overall stability of the device.

Today’s Deal – Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact is as low as $499 on Amazon

Today’s Deal is on the Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact, the company’s 4.6″ Android phone that was launched in September of last year.  The XZ1 Compact is the follow up to the popular Xperia X Compact from 2016 and has some mighty impressive specs for its small size.  Right now on Amazon you can pick up the phone in Midnight Blue for $505, a savings of $94 off the normal price.  If blue isn’t your thing, you can get it in White Silver for a little more, $539.  If  Twilight Pink is your color, you can pick up the XZ1 Compact in that color for just $499.

The  Xperia XZ1 Compact has a 4.6″ full HD display (1920 x 1080) and is powered by the Snapdragon 835 SoC and coupled with the Adreno 540 GPU.  It has 4GB of RAM and has 32GB of storage.  That storage can be expanded up to an additional 256GB thanks to the MicroSD slot.

As for cameras, the Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact follows up last year’s X Compact well.  It has a 19MP rear camera that uses Sony’s SteadyShot for image stabilization.  The front facing camera is an 8MP shooter that has 120° wide-angle to capture the most in your selfies.

The Tech & Apps That I Use Every Day

One of the most common questions that I get asked, both here on the site, as well as by friends and family has to do with the hardware and software I use every day.  It is a fair question and one that people ask out of both curiosity as well as doing a “stare and compare” with their own tech.

I’ve always said that you need to use the right technology that works for you.  That may be an Android Phone or an iPhone.  That may be a Windows PC or a MacBook Pro.  Whatever the technology, it has to get the job done for you and for me, this list of hardware and software, works for me.  I encourage readers to look into what I use to see if it fits their needs but at the end of the day, it is a personal use case as to whether it will or will not.

I’ve broken this article into two parts.  The first is the primary hardware that I use each day with the second focused on the apps that I use on them.  The apps could be on my phone, my tablet or my Chromebook and I’ll note that as I go along.  As for hardware, I’ll cover what I use every day as well as other devices I use from time-to-time.  You’ll note that very little of what I have is new and that’s on purpose.  I tend not to buy the latest and greatest because I, like most of you reading this, are looking for value in my purchases or I use things for a long time before replacing them.
