Huawei P20 Lineup Likely to be Announced March 27 in Paris

Huawei has begun sending out press invites to an event being held on March 27 in Paris.  The event is likely the launch event for the follow up to last year’s P10, the Huawei P20.  The invite does not specifically call out the P20 but only references “new flagship devices”.  Given that the Mate 10 Pro has already been announced, the P20 is the logical answer to what will be shown at the event.

Not much is known about the Huawei P20.  Rumors suggest it will have a triple rear camera configuration and will likely be powered by the new Kirin 970, the Huawei built SoC that powers the Mate 10 Pro.  There will also likely be three devices in the lineup:  The P20, P20 Light and P20 Plus.

US Version of The Huawei Mate 9 Getting its Android Oreo Update

After being released in various other markets, the Android Oreo update for the US variant of the Huawei Mate 9 is now rolling out.  Both the MHA-L29 and MHA-L09 are getting the update and it should be coming to your Mate 9 over the course of the next few days.  The 29 is the dual SIM variant while the 09 is the single SIM.

Along with the update to Android Oreo itself, you will be getting the January Android Security Update patch, a new portrait mode for the rear camera, and the new AI-driving EMUI 8 user experience.

Verizon Kills Plans to Sell Huawei Phones

Facing political pressure to scrap the deal, Verizon is dropping their plans to sell Huawei phones to their customers here in the United States.  The plan is a blow to the Chinese manufacture who suffered a similar blow from AT&T earlier this month.

The news comes from sources at Bloomberg who state the main thrust behind the decision was political pressure due to concerns about the company potentially spying for the Chinese government, something Huawei has long denied and there being no evidence from the other countries where their devices are sold as this being an issue.

Huawei to Integrate Android Messages into Upcoming Devices

Late yesterday, Google and Huawei both announced an agreement where by the Chinese manufacture will start integrating the RCS-powered Android Messages app into their upcoming devices.  The move means that Huawei will abandon their current messaging app in favor of Google’s for a richer user experience.

With Android Messages and RCS messaging, HUAWEI devices will offer a rich native messaging and communications experience. Features such as texting over WiFi, rich media sharing, group chats, and typing indicators will now be a default part of the device. Messages from businesses will also be upgraded on HUAWEI’s devices through RCS business messaging from Google.

Huawei also announced that they will be integrating with Google Duo for video calls directly from Messages via carrier’s ViLTE services.

Yes, Microsoft Stores will be Selling the Huawei Mate 10 Pro

With all of the news coming out around Huawei this week at CES, there was a point that got missed by many.  That is, the new Huawei Mate 10 Pro will be sold in Microsoft Stores.  The news of this was actually in the official press release about the Mate 10 Pro coming to Best Buy, Amazon, B&H and Newegg.  But in there was also Microsoft and it got missed by a lot of folks.

Like other retailers, the Mate 10 Pro will be available from Microsoft for $799.

The news of this should not come as much of a surprise for those who keep tabs on Microsoft and Android.  Earlier this month I posted about the fact that there are now more Android phones in the Microsoft Store for you to buy than Windows 10 Phones.  Given that the company has essentially stopped development on Windows 10 Phone, it is hardly a surprise that the focus is now on Android.

Honor View 10 Coming to The United States Later This Year

At CES 2018, Huawei has announced that the Honor View 10 will be making its way to the United States in 2018.  The View 10 is currently Honor’s flagship device and will available in Europe and Asia starting today.  While a timeline wasn’t given on when the phone will hit the US, it appears to be in reasonably short order based on rumors.

For those that may not know the specs of the Honor View 10, they are pretty impressive.  The phone sports a 5.99″ IPS FHD display with a 18:9 ratio.  It is powered by Huawei’s Kirin 970 SoC, has up to 6GB of RAM and up to 128GB of storage.  It has dual rear cameras of 16MP and 20MP while the selfie camera is a 13MP shooter.  All of this is powered by a 3750mAh battery.

Today’s Deal – Huawei Honor 6X is $149 on Amazon

Today’s Deal is on the powerful yet budget friendly Honor 6X.  Honor is the sub-brand of Huawei and the 6X is one of their late-2016 models.  I reviewed the phone back in March and it was the first Honor product I’ve reviewed.  I was impressed, especially for the price point.  That price has gone down to $149 on Amazon and that makes it an even better deal.

The Honor 6X measures 150.9 x 76.2 x 8.2 mm or 5.94 x 3.00 x 0.32 inches in old money.  It weighs 162g or 5.71 ounces.  The display on the phone measures 5.5″ and renders a Full HD resolution of 1080 x 1920.  That gives you an approximate pixel-per-inch count of 403.  It has 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, which can be expanded thanks to the MicroSD slot.

The main camera configuration of the 6X consists of dual-cameras rated at 12MP and 2MP.  The Sony built sensor has a 1.25µm pixel size and has phase detection autofocus.  It has an LED flash for low light photography.  On the front, the selfie camera is an 8MP shooter.  Both the front and the rear cameras are capable of shooting HD video at 1080p at 30fps.
