Google Play Music Update Brings Auto Download Feature

The Google Play Music app has been updated today for Android devices and while it is mostly a bug fix release, there are a few new features that are worth a mention.  This new build is verion 6.1.2115T for those keeping score at home and it is rolling out to the Google Play Store now.  If you have the app installed then you should expect to see the OTA update for it anytime over the next couple of days.

As far as new features in this update, the first thing you will notice is a completely revamped Settings menu.  Things are generally much more organized into sections with this update and it is a bit easier to see all of your settings without having to tap to change a particular setting in most cases.  Functionally there isn’t much different other than the new Auto-offline feature which I will discuss after the break but I find the new Settings to be a bit easier to figure out what to adjust in Google Play Music.

New Chromecast Comes With A Free Movie & 90 Google Play Music Subscription

[Update] Thanks to Google+ user Luke Hook who pointed out that those of you who have the original Chromecast also have these offers available to you.  This is not just limited to the new Chromecast.  Thanks Luke!

If you have been one of those who have picked up one of the new 2015 Chromecast devices, there are some offers available to you through the Chromecast app that you won’t want to miss out on.  The offers are from a range of content providers, all obviously Chromecast enabled, to bring you TV, movies and music to you.  Two of the offers come from Google themselves:  a free movie rental through the Google Movies & TV app and a 90 trial subscription to Google Play Music Unlimited.

Google Play Music Subscription Gifting Now Available

Last month during the Google event that saw the Nexus 5X and 6P announced, Google made several announcements around other services including Google Play Music.  While the big news was the upcoming family subscription service, the ability to send subscription gives was also very briefly mentioned.  That feature it appears has now gone live.

If you navigate to the Google Play Music app on your Android phone or tablet and open the hamburger menu, you will now see a “Send gift” option.  Tapping it will take you to the Google Play Music website where you can then place your gift subscription order.

Google Play Music Adds Ad-Supported Free Music Streaming

You may have 99 problems, but streaming radio certainly shouldn’t be one of them.  Last week Google announced that their Google Play Music app and service will now provide you free, ad-supported streaming music to your Android phone and tablet with a premium, ad-free service costing $9.99 per month. It falls in line with other services that are already available and the upcoming Apple Music service coming to iOS in July.  The question for Google will be if anyone will be interested given there are so many options available today but the Google Play Music does have some nice features like being able to incorporate your own music you have uploaded into the service, something you aren’t able to do on some other services.  To get this new streaming feature you will need to have the latest Google Play Music app which is now up to version 6.0.1945S for those keeping score at home.
