Today’s Deal – Huawei Mate 9 for $449 at Amazon

Today’s Deal is on the fantastic phablet from Huawei, the Huawei Mate 9.  Today on Amazon you can pick up the 5.9″ phone with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage for $449.95.  That’s $150 off the original $599 price tag.  Plus, you have the choice of two colors for this price:  Moonlight Silver or Space Grey.  I reviewed the Mate 9 earlier this year and it is an outstanding device with an awesome display, great battery life and excellent cameras.  At this price, it is well worth considering.

So what does $449 get you in the Huawei Mate 9?  A lot frankly.  It is a 5.9″ phone running Android Nougat, an octa-core processor running at 2.4GHz and Leica optics dual-camera setup shooting at 20MP and 12MP respectively with OIS.  The front facing selfie camera is 8MP shooter.  You also have 64GB of built-in storage that can be expanded up to an additional  256GB thanks to the MicroSD slot.  Finally, it comes with a US warranty so you are not buying an international version of the phone.

Update to ZTE Axon 7 Brings Security and Performance Updates

For those who have the ZTE Axon 7, you have a new update rolling out to you that brings a lot of improvements.  The update has just been released so it will take a few days to get to everyone.  Once you have it, you will have the August 2017 Android Security Update on your device along with multi user support amongst other improvements.

The multi user feature allows you to setup user profiles and those individuals can use the phone.  This sounds very similar to the way native Android setups multiple users.   You will also find that the Hiya app that ZTE uses for blocking spam calls has been moved to the Google Play Store for future updates.

Sony Announces Xperia Devices That Will Get Android Oreo

With every new version of Android, the question of which phones from which manufactures will get the update is omnipresent.  Android Oreo is no exception.  Sony, today, joined the ranks of manufactures who plan on releasing the latest version of Android for devices.

While the new Sony Xperia XZ1 and XZ1 Compact will come with Oreo out-of-the-box, it was unclear which ones they would update that are in their current lineup.  Now thanks to a blog post, now we know.  Here are the devices that Sony plans to update to Android Oreo.

  • Xperia X
  • Xperia X Performance
  • Xperia XZ
  • Xperia X Compact
  • Xperia XZ Premium
  • Xperia XZs
  • Xperia XA1
  • Xperia XA1 Ultra
  • Xperia Touch
  • Xperia XA1 Plus

While these lists are never as complete as everyone would like, the one from Sony is reasonably comprehensive in that it covers most of their 2016 and 2017 models.

OK Google, Take A Screenshot Command Now Available

There is a new command in Google Assistant that makes taking a screenshot of your phone even easier.  Now you can either long press the home button on your phone or simply saying “OK Google, take a screenshot” to capture display on your phone.

The ability to capture a screenshot on virtually any Android phone (or tablet for that matter) has been available for a long time through the button combination of Power+Volume Down and it remains so today.  Further, many manufactures have included a shortcut in the Notification Shade for easy screenshots (Huawei and Lenovo for example).  Even Google at one point had a screenshot option in Google Now but none of these have been voice enabled to this point.

Download the LG V30 Wallpapers

The LG V30 was announced earlier this morning and now you can download the official wallpapers for LG’s latest flagship phone.

In all, there are 22 wallpapers that come with the V30 and I’ve added them all to the wallpaper page.  After the break, I’ve also added them to this post for those who are interested.  As I always do, I display them in a lower resolution to speed things up but when you click on the wallpaper, you will get the full 2880 x 1440 image.

As you would expect, all of the wallpapers for the V30 are in a 18:9 ratio so if you have a phone that renders at that ratio, they will work perfectly.  For other, smaller ratio phones, you’ll have a bit of a cropped image.

As a reminder,  6″ display is a QHD P-OLED display that renders 2880 x 1440 in a 18:9 ratio.  That gives you a very eye comforting 538ppi.    LG refers to the display as FullVision which is their term for a near bezel-less experience.  The phone is powered by the Snapdragon 835 SoC with 4GB of RAM.  This is coupled with either 64GB or 128GB of storage depending on the variant you pick up.  That storage can be expanded up to an additional 2TB thanks to the MicroSD slot.
