What To Expect at Google’s Event

The Google event is tomorrow and there is a lot that we are going to see.  From a new version of Android to new Android devices, we are going to get a wide range of things to ponder and lust over and there will likely even be a few surprises.  There are some things that are a given:  Two new Nexus phones, Android Marshmallow and a new Chromecast device.  But what else could we see?  I think there is a greater that zero chance we will see a lot more from the Googlers.

New Nexus Phones – Probability 100%

Again, this one is a given.  We will see not one but two new Nexus phones.  The Nexus 5X is 5.2″ device powered by the Snapdragon 808 processor while the Nexus 6P will be a 5.7″ device running the Snapdragon 810 processor.  The Nexus 5X is expected to be full HD while the 6P will be QuadHD and both will have over 400PPI so they are going to be ultra crisp and clean viewing displays no matter which size device you choose.  The Nexus 6P will come with the option of 128GB storage on board, a first for a Nexus device, while the 5X will come in 16/32/64GB of storage.  From a camera perspective, the 6P will have a 20MP camera while the 5X will only have a 13MP rear shooter.  Finally, both will have a fingerprint scanner for authentication, something that is supported in Android Marshmallow which these devices will be running.

Most of what we know on the Nexus 5X and 6P are already leaked so I don’t think we are going to see any surprises with the actual release tomorrow.  I suspect both devices will go on sale in October.

Angry Birds Rio Update Brings 20 New Levels

While all of the Angry Birds hype these past few months has been on Angry Birds 2, the franchise itself still has a lot of older games that are just as fun.  The 2nd oldest in the series, Angry Birds Rio, received a somewhat rare update today, bringing with it 20 new Amazon River themed levels to the game.  The update is version 2.5 for those keeping score at home and it is available for both Android phones and tablets.  It is a freemium game so it won’t cost you anything to download but there are plenty of in-app purchases to further yourself along should you chose to do so.

Google Clock for Android Gets A Major Update

Earlier this week, Google dropped a pretty big update to Google Clock in the Play Store.  While most of us look at clock apps as pedestrian and not very exciting, this update to Google Clock actually brings a lot of new functionality and features that will make this utilitarian app a bit more useful and personal.  The update is build 4.2 for those keeping score at home and is available for both Android phones and tablets.

Among the changes in this update is the ability to have your alarms gradually increase in volume so you are gently notified or awaken instead of being jarred awake by a blasting alarm.  Speaking of alarms, you can now also select your favorite ringtone as your alarm sound instead of the standard ones the app offered previously.

Google Celebrates Android’s 7th Birthday with Wallpapers

Without a lot of fanfare or hoopla, Google quietly celebrated the 7th birthday of Android.  On September 23, 2008, Android 1.0 made its debut with T-Mobile G1, also known as the HTC Dream making it commercially available for the first time.  To celebrate the release of the mobile operating system 7 years ago, Google has released 3 celebratory wallpapers which you can download for your device.  All three feature a sweets-and-treats them, as you would expect, and come in a shade of blue, white and black backgrounds.

Review of TruShield Glass Screen Protectors

I will be the first to admit that I have never been a big fan of screen protectors.  The film style protectors never seemed to offer much protection other than scratches (which with Gorilla Glass 3 now on most device, do you need this?) and I was forever struggling to keep them on or get them on without having the random air bubble in them.  In fact up until this summer I had all but given up on them.

That’s when my wife introduced me to TruShield.  She had been using TruShield screen protectors on her iPhone 5S for over a year and swore by them for their protection of her screen for the occasional drop and of course scratches, dust and dirt.  She also liked the fact that they did not fingerprint up as bad as the screen on her iPhone itself.  I decided to try them out on my Nexus 6 and Nexus 7 to see what I thought.  I’ve been more than impressed and pleased with the TruShield protectors for my devices.

The TruShield protectors are made of .33mm tempered glass that is 9H rated for hardness.  This is the highest level of scratch resistance you can find in a tempered glass screen protector.  It is also ultra clear so you don’t lose any of the vivid color of your display on your device and in some case it actually enhances it a bit.  With dozens of models for mobile devices and tablets available, there is likely a TruShield protector available for your device and I have no hesitation in recommending them.
