Google Bringing In App Translations to Android Marshmallow

As I like to often say, living the future is pretty cool and thanks to Google, it’s about to get even more cool.  On the Android Developer Blog, Google has posted that starting next week, for those of you who have Google Translate and are running Android Marshmallow, they will begin offering in-app translation for apps that have been configured to support the feature.  The feature is one that could be very handy for those who want to read reviews or other user generated content without having to go out of the app and into Google Translate.  It works seamlessly on the backed.

How To Display The Android Marshmallow Icon Wallpaper

If you have been on any Android centric website then undoubtedly you have seen the Android Marshmallow (or previously the Android Lollipop) icon wallpaper.  This is where you have the Marshmallow logo laid over your current wallpaper on your Android device.  If you have ever wondered how that icon is found, it’s actually easy and it is in every Android device.  The even better news is that it is quite literally only a few taps away on your device.

T-Mobile Lists and Tracks Android Marshmallow Updates for Their Devices

While a lot of announcements around Android Marshmallow has been from a manufacture perspective, for those who are locked in to particular carriers the bigger question is if that carrier will provide (translate: allow) the update to hit the devices on their network.  For their part at least, T-Mobile is address this for their customers.  Today they have updated their Software Tracking Page that allows you to see at what phase of testing and deployment the Android Marshmallow update is coming to their devices.

This list is includes devices that have already had the update ready and are rolling out, most notably the Nexus devices, while other devices like the HTC One M9 state that “T-Mobile and the manufacture have agreed to support a new software update”

Sony Outlines Devices Receiving Android Marshmallow

With the rollout of Android Marshmallow now in full effect for Nexus devices, attention is quickly turning to other manufactures on when or if they will be rolling it out to their devices.  We know that HTC and Samsung have a reasonable list of devices that will be getting Marshmallow and just last week, Motorola released their list which was met with lukewarm enthusiasm given a number of carrier devices are not on the list.

Now we have finally heard from Sony.

The Japanese company on their blog today released the list of devices in their Xperia line that will be Android Marshmallow update and it is comprehensive.

Google Play Movies & TV App Update Brings Android Marshmallow Support

Google has released an update to the Google Play Movies & TV app that, amongst many changes, brings Android Marshmallow support to the app.  The update is version 3.9.20 for those keeping score at home and it is available for both Android phones and tablets.  Given that Android Marshmallow is starting to roll out today, it is a good idea to get this update so you can assure compatibility.  Note that if you already have Google Play Movies & TV installed you should get the update via an OTA over the next couple of days.

As the name suggests for those who aren’t familiar with it, Google Play Movies & TV is the app that allows you to purchase, download and stream movies and televisions shows from the Google library.  Once you make a purchase through the app or the Google Play Store, you can download it to your devices for offline viewing or you can simply stream it on your device.  The app is also Chromecast compatible and works great with the Chromecast 2015 device (You can read my review of it here).

Review of Chromecast 2015 – A Nice Step Forward

Among the many things that Google announced last week was a 2nd generation Chromecast.  For those who don’t know, the Chromecast devices connect to your television via HDMI and allow you to show (“cast”) apps, photos and app content to your television.  For example, you can cast Netflix using your Android phone or tablet as a remote control and telling your Chromecast what you want to view.  It then streams that content over your Wi-Fi network to your television.

There are a lot of things that make the 2015 model really attractive.  First is the price.  At only $35, you have a lot of functionality you are adding to your television at a minimal cost.  Second is the ease of use and setup.  You can literally be up and running in 5 minutes after you plug in the device to your television.  Finally, there is powerful and significantly improved app for Android that not only shows you apps you have installed that support casting, but gives you content at your fingertips you can easily start streaming content.

This new 2nd generation Chromecast isn’t without its faults but for the majority of users out there, this update is the a step in the right direction and if you are well entrenched in the Google ecosystem, is most decidedly a no-brainer to purchase.

Android Marshmallow Factory Images Now Available

With Android Marshmallow expected to be released Over-the-Air (OTA) tomorrow, Google is already paving the way for that to happen.  They have just posted the Factory Images of Android Marshmallow for the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7 (2013), Nexus 9 and Nexus Player on the Android developer website for those of you who have been running the preview of Marshmallow or want to root your device and install it today instead of waiting for the OTA.

Unless you know what you are doing, I strongly advise waiting to get the OTA instead of doing the Factory Image install but the instructions for doing it are on the site.

Motorola Lists Devices Receiving The Android Marshmallow Update

The good news about Android Marshmallow updates keeps on coming.  We know that Nexus devices are getting the update next Tuesday while the HTC One M8 and One M9 will get it before the end of the year.  Samsung has a list of devices to and now we can add Motorola to the list of OEMs who are committing to the update.

Today on their blog, Motorola released the list of devices they plan to offer the Android Marshmallow update to over the coming weeks and months and it is a pretty nice list all-said.
