Whether you are an Apple fan or not, you have to give them credit:  They have some pretty awesome wallpapers for their devices.  The new high-end iMac Pro is no exception.  The latest and most powerful iMac is now available and it starts at an eye watering $5,000.  But, if you want that storm cloud wallpaper that comes as the default wallpaper and don’t want to spend the money, you are covered.

On the Wallpapers page and after the break on this post, you will find the all new iMac Pro default wallpaper for you to download and put on all your devices.  The wallpaper measures 5120 x 2880 so it will be plenty big for any of your devices, big or small.  I’ve put it after the break so those who aren’t interested can move along but if you want to get it for yourself, read on.

How To Create a Recover Disk for Your Chromebook

Like any platform, Chrome OS from time-to-time gets corrupted.  It doesn’t happen often – I’ve never had it happen in the two-plus years I’ve been using the platform.  However, when it does, you’ll need to make sure you are prepared to get things back in order quickly so you can get back to being product (or YouTube cat video watching as the case may be).

Chrome OS has a great recovery tool that is built into Chromebooks that allows you to create a recover disk using a USB drive that allows you to quickly restore your computer.  Like a Powerwash, when you use the recovery drive to restore, you will wipe the data stored on it and it will return it back to a factory default.  But that’s okay.  Remember that Chrome OS leverage the cloud for storage and unless you have some local files like pictures or files you’ve not sync’d to your Google Drive, you shouldn’t loose any data.

In this How To, I’m going to walk you step-by-step through the process of creating a recovery disk for your Chromebook and then walk you through the actual recovery process.  Like many things Chrome OS, it is pretty straightforward.

Before getting into the process, make sure that you have an extra USB drive around that is at least 8GB in size.  I use a 16GB PNY USB Drive for my Acer Chromebook 14 and it works great (and it’s cheap).

Bing for Android Update Brings Revamped Home Page & Other Improvements

Microsoft has released an update for their Bing app for Android.  The update brings a significant number of changes and improvements to the search app including a new home screen.  The update is version 8.0.25268601 for those keeping score at home and if you have Bing installed on your phone, you should see the update come via an OTA update over the course of the next few days.

The first change you will note is the improved Home page.  Now you have the familiar search section of the Home page, but below that you now have news cards of top stories more visible.  The page also gives you easy access to your voice assistant and camera.  Microsoft has injected Machine Learning into the app now and over time, it will learn your habits and what you like to read so it will bubble up more relevant information to you.  Like other apps, the more you use it, the smarter and more personalized it will become.  Also, you can explicitly dislike a story or source by tapping the overflow menu (the … menu)  on the card.

Microsoft OneDrive Update Brings Oreo Notification Channel Support

The Microsoft OneDrive app for Android has a new update rolling out that those who are running Android Oreo will appreciate.  The update, version 5.2 for those keeping score at home, brings improve support for the latest version of Android including support for Notification Channels.

For those who aren’t familiar with Notification Channels, it allows you to set the priority of notifications for apps that support it so that you are constantly alerted to anything related to the app or, the opposite, no notifications at all.  The team over at Android Central put together a great primer on Notification Channels in Oreo that I highly recommend reading.

Google Photos Auto Creating “Smiles of 2017” Videos

Google Photos has been quietly rolling out a new AI-driven movie to many users over the past few days.  The new video will show up in your Assistant tab in the app and it titled “Smiles of 2017”.  With the hint in the name, you’ve probably guessed that this short video consists of photos of people smiling, be it selfies or other people that you have photographed over the past year.

The video falls under what is commonly referred to as the “auto awesome” features of Google Photos.  That is, the app which is driven by Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, will scour your photos to create photos or videos based on the content of your photos.
