Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 Updates to Android Oreo Now Rolling Out

Owners of the Nokia 5 and Nokia 6, today is a good day.  Your Android Oreo update has been released and is on its way.  The new came from HMD Global’s Chief Product Officer, Juho Sarvikas, on Twitter.

Both devices began beta testing their respective Oreo builds back in December and clearly the feedback from testers and the rate of development from Nokia was quick to have the official build out within a month.

ASUS ZenFone 3 Update to Android Oreo Released

The ASUS ZenFone 3 is the latest ASUS phone to start getting its update to Android Oreo.  The update was released yesterday and should be making its way to owners as an OTA update over the course of the next few days.  The new firmware build is version 15.0410.1712.31 for those keeping score at home.

The update brings all of the things that you expect from Oreo along with an overall improved UI experience for the ZenFone 3.  One of those changes is a new app drawer where you will simply swipe up to show all the apps installed on your phone.  This behavior is similar to Google’s Pixel devices.

In Case You Missed It – Twitter Supports Notification Channels in Oreo

This one could have passed by you without you noticing because it seems to have passed a lot of people by it seems.  Twitter, sometime late last year, rolled out Notification Channel support for those running the social networking app on Android Oreo.  The problem is, they never announced it or put it in the release notes so it isn’t clear when the new feature came into the app.

Notification Channels, in case you don’t know or remember, allow you to set more granular toggles on the types of notifications you get from an app.  It is supported in Oreo but not every app has support for it yet.  Usually when a developer adds support, they advertise it.  Apparently not Twitter.

Good news for those of you who have the ZTE Axon 7, Android Oreo is now in beta for your phone.  The Chinese manufacture quietly began rolling out a beta program for the latest version of Oreo over the weekend, with select users being able to opt into the program.  While no official timeline was given on when an official Oreo build will come out for the 2016 flagship phone, which actually launched with Marshmallow at the time.

In the ZTE forums, there is a screenshot of the Axon 7 running Oreo with the notice that it is in the first round of beta testing.  Again, how many cycles there will be on the beta test is unclear.

HTC U11 EYEs Officially Announced

After virtually all of the details about the device were leaked last week, including on HTC’s own site over the weekend, the Taiwanese company has made the new HTC U11 EYEs mid-range phone official.  Priced at roughly $500 US, the phone is now available for pre-order within Taiwan with it remaining unclear what future expansion globally the U11 EYEs will see.

As for the phone itself, it looks very similar to the flagship U11 device from HTC.  Constructed of aluminum and glass, the U11 EYEs is powered by the Snapdragon 652 SoC and is coupled with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.  That storage can be expanded up to 2TB thanks to the MicroSD/second SIM tray in the phone.  Display wise, it has a 6″ FullHD Super LCD 3 display that renders at 2160 x 1080, giving a comfortable ~402 ppi.  It also has Edge Sense like the other U11 phones, giving you the ability to squeeze the edge of the phone to perform certain tasks.

Android Oreo Update Released for the HTC 10

The Android Oreo update for the 2016 HTC flagship phone, the HTC 10, has been released for the unlocked variant.  The update is build 3.16.617.2 for those keeping score at home and it is a hefty 1.5GB download.  You’ll certainly need to download it via WiFi.

The update brings all the goodness of Android Oreo to the HTC 10 with things such as Picture-in-Picture, App Notifications and Notification channels just to name a few things.  The update also represents the last major update to the 10.  It shipped with Android Marshmallow in 2016 and was upgraded to Nougat last year.  Kudos to HTC for offering the upgrade on the two year old phone when many other manufactures don’t do so.
