OnePlus Community App Hits The Play Store

OnePlus has had an active community of users and fans since their break into the market a couple of years back.  There is likely no better example of that community then the company’s user forums.  They are always teeming with activity, from those who are seeking help and those providing it, to company announcements about new software updates and hardware.  On the OnePlus 3, their latest phone, built into OxygenOS was a community forums app so users could get quick help or provide help right from their phone.  Now that app has made its way to the Play Store for anyone to install on their phones.

If you have been wanting to pick up a spare USB drive or two, PNY has a great deal for you today.  Today’s Deal is on the PNY Attache 128GB USB drive.  This USB 2.0 drive is on sale today for $19.99 over at Amazon.  That’s a savings of 71% off the regular price.  The PNY Attache is a light-weight design that is capless (so you don’t have to lose it – because we all lose the caps on these

things!), using a sliding colar to protect the USB connector of the drive.  It also has a key loop so you can attach it to your keyring so it is on you at all times.  The drive is compatible with both PC and Mac so regardless of what you are using, it should work for you.

Since this is an external drive which could contain sensitive information, I always recommend readers to encrypt the drive in case you do lose it.

The sale on the drive is while supplies last and there are other sizing options available if you don’t need 128GB.  Here is a rundown of the options that are available and their prices:

There are also multi-packs available for those who need more than one drive but there is no multi-pack on the 128GB model given its price point.  Also, given the demand for this drive, processing is taking an extra day or so from Amazon but the drive is in stock (at least right now).

Chromecast Ultra Now Available in The Google Store

Google has officially started selling the Chromecast Ultra.  The speedier and 4K-supporting casting device just went live in the Google Store for $69.  Back in the October Google event, where the Pixel lineup and Google Home were announced, this new update to the Chromecast was also presented.  The biggest improvement is the support for 4K video.  With so many 4K televisions out there now, support for UltraHD is somewhat necessary at this point and it is good to see it come to the Chromecast which, to this point, has been limited to 1080P.

Sony Xperia X Compact Review – Great Performance in a Small Package

We live in a world with big display phones and in Androidland, that is most certainly the case.  It is hard to find device under 5″ that have any sort of horsepower or performance.  The problem is, not everyone wants a 5.5″ device or even a 5.2″ device and that means you are meant making compromises in either screen size (going larger than you want) or performance.  I’ve been using the Sony Xperia X Compact over the course of the last few weeks and it is the one phone in the sub-5″ screen size market that doesn’t require that compromise.  It offers solid performance, good battery life and a camera that is truly impressive.  As I posted in my initial thoughts on the Xperia X Compact, it is a phone that should not be judged on it size when it comes to performance.  This phone has plenty of horsepower to do anything you need, including gaming and streaming, but does it in a small and comfortable package.  While the $499 price tag may put some off, if you are in the market for a smaller phone that doesn’t have a lot of compromises, the Xperia X Compact should be on your short list.

Here is my review.

Twitter Adds App Shortcuts Support

Twitter has rolled out an update to their Android app that brings support for App Shortcuts.  It makes them just the latest to offer the new feature, something that is coming natively to Android Nougat 7.1 but can be experienced in other devices with launchers that support them.  Specific to Twitter, this updated version gives users the ability to send a new direct message, a new Tweet or to do a search of Twitter for specific content.  Once you select the shortcut you want, the app launches to that particular feature automatically.  This makes it super quick to send a new message or a new Tweet.
