Today’s Deal – Anker MicroUBS 5-Pack for $12.99

Today’s Deal over at Amazon is a great one for those who need to stock up on some MicroUSB cables for their various Android devices and accessories.  Today you can pick up a 5-pack of cables from Anker for $12.99.  The pack comes with one 1′ cable, two 3′ cables, one 6′ cable and one 10′ cable to get your power situation sorted no matter the situation.  Each cable is made of a

combination of hard PVC for the connectors and soft, flexible PVC for the cable shielding.  That gives the cables a high level of durability and, in fact, Anker claims it can withstand over 10,000 bends.

As with other Anker products, the cables all come with an 18 month warranty against defects so you are protected for the long run.  I personally am a big fan of their products and have this very cable pack (along with some of their USB C cables for my Nexus 6P) and have no hesitation in recommending them.  They get the job done and they are able to handle the wear-and-tear of my daily life at home or on the road.

The promotional price at Amazon is through today or while supplies last.  The good news is if you want to pick up an extra or give them as a gift, there is no limit to the number you can pick up.

Project Fi App Now Shows Per App Data Usage

The Project Fi app for subscribers has received a nice behind the scenes update that most users will find quite helpful.  Now you can see which apps have consumed the most data in your current billing cycle.  The good news is that no new app download is required.  So long as you are running the most current version you will see this new information within the app.

Pocket Casts Gets A Major Update

The outstanding (and my clear favorite) podcast app, Pocket Casts, has a major update rolling out in the Play Store today.  The update, version 6.0 for those keeping score at home, brings support for key Android Nougat features as well as the ability to share your list of podcasts with others.  As for the Nougat features, multi-window support is now in the app.  Now you can view a video podcast on 1/2 of your device screen while working on something else in the other half.  This is particularly handy if you are viewing an educational podcast and want to jot notes down in Keep for example.

Google Calendar Adds Month View Widget

Google Calendar for Android has an update rolling out that brings mostly one new but desired feature by users:  A monthly calendar view widget.  The updated version of the app, version 5.6.2 for those keeping score at home, allows you to add a widget that can be resized to show an entire month of your calendar without having to open the app itself.  This is a feature that many other calendar apps have already so it is very much a catch up feature.  Previously you only had one widget which provided you the schedule view.  It too was resizable but it would just stretch out the items on your schedule.  Not super useful if you need to see what you have going on a few weeks from now.

Alphabet Posts $5.1b Profit, Mostly Thanks to Google

The parent company of Google, Alphabet, has released their 3rd Quarter earnings report and it is all about Google.  The company made some $5.1 billion in profits for the quarter that ended in September with the vast majority of those dollars coming from the flagship brand of the company.  Google itself brought in $22.2 billion and made an operating profit of $6.7 billion.  That was countered with the other divisions of the company losing $865 million.
