Review – The Huawei Mate 10 Pro is A Solid Evolution of a Great Flagship

When it comes to flagship devices in 2018, there are certain expectations you have in that device.  It is going to have a solid display, likely 18:9.  It is going to have solid performance, excellent battery life and cameras that give you those great shots every day no matter the conditions.  That is a significant list of demands and few phones fully meet all the criteria.  But the latest flagship from Huawei, the Huawei Mate 10 Pro, does so brilliantly.

Building on the solid foundation of the Mate 8 of 2016 and the Mate 9 of 2017, the Mate 10 Pro is an evolution of all the things Huawei has learned on their phones.  While this is evident under-the-hood with their updated, AI-driven Kirin SoC, it is also in the more visible parts too.  EMUI 8, the company’s take on Android Oreo, is everything that the previous version where not.  In other words, it is intutitive and solid.  I actually like EMUI now.  Add to that an impressive dual camera configuration with Leica optics and you will get stunning photos from the phone too.  It is a pretty complete package that is fun to use.

Recently I was sent a Huawei Mate 10 Pro by Huawei USA to review and after using it, I can easily recommend it for those of you who are looking for a flagship phone.  At a price of $799, it is certainly in the flagship price range but you’ll find very few compromises with this phone.

Huawei Mate 10 Lineup Receiving a Significant Bug Fix Update

The Huawei Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro have a significant bug fixing update rolling out in the manufacture’s home country, China.  The update brings a number of bug fixes and stability improvements to both devices.  The update to EMUI, the company’s Android Oreo build, is version 8.0.0.127 (SP1C00) and it is the same for both devices.

From an optimization perspective, there are seven improvements noted in the release notes for the build.

  • Optimizes Camera and the Navigation dock.
  • Optimizes the Beauty feature by adding special touches based on the genders of the photographed subjects.
  • Optimizes the accessibility of the Navigation dock, which can now be used in Ultra power saving mode and the notification panel.
  • Optimizes the system power consumption by controlling the consumption of third-party apps
  • Simplifies the operation of the status bar (tapping on it to return to the call screen is supported).
  • Increases the speed of grabbing WeChat lucky money.
  • Enjoy being faster than the rest even when in the same network environment.

Download The Huawei Mate 10 Pro Stock EMUI Themes

Over the weekend, the Huawei Mate 10 Pro became available for pre-order from several retailers, including Amazon.  The $799 flagship phone will ship on February 18th and if you buy it at Amazon, you get a $150 Amazon gift card with it.  Not a bad deal.

As with previous Huawei phones, the Mate 10 Pro will come with a selection of EMUI themes that are unique to it – for now.  As these things go, it doesn’t take much to extract these stock themes and now you can download them yourself for your current Huawei or Honor phone.  In all, there are 9 themes that come on the phone and you can download the files here in one ZIP file.

The Huawei Mate 10 Pro Now Available for Pre-Order

The new Huawei Mate 10 Pro is now available for pre-order from several different retailers starting today.  The new flagship phablet device is $799.99 and will start shipping on February 18.

The phone will be sold unlocked and will work with various GSM carriers here in the US like AT&T, T-Mobile, and Cricket Wireless.

For those that don’t recall, the Huawei Mate 10 Pro is powered by Huawei’s own Kirin 970 octa-core processor, comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage on the base model.  There is also a 6GB/128GB model.  The display is a 1080 x 2160 pixels, 18:9 ratio AMOLED that gives ~402 ppi density.  It is protected by Gorilla Glass.

Yes, Microsoft Stores will be Selling the Huawei Mate 10 Pro

With all of the news coming out around Huawei this week at CES, there was a point that got missed by many.  That is, the new Huawei Mate 10 Pro will be sold in Microsoft Stores.  The news of this was actually in the official press release about the Mate 10 Pro coming to Best Buy, Amazon, B&H and Newegg.  But in there was also Microsoft and it got missed by a lot of folks.

Like other retailers, the Mate 10 Pro will be available from Microsoft for $799.

The news of this should not come as much of a surprise for those who keep tabs on Microsoft and Android.  Earlier this month I posted about the fact that there are now more Android phones in the Microsoft Store for you to buy than Windows 10 Phones.  Given that the company has essentially stopped development on Windows 10 Phone, it is hardly a surprise that the focus is now on Android.

Leaked Image of the Huawei Mate 10 Pro From Evan Blass

We know that the Huawei Mate 10 is coming in a few weeks but images of the Mate 10 Pro, the top end version of the phone, have been scarce.  It seems that Evan Blass has the answer once again.  He took to Twitter in the wee hours of Sunday to post images of the upcoming Pro version of the phone.

While the phone is being referred to as the Mate 10 Pro, that’s more or less a distinction from the expected Mate 10 Lite that is to also be announced later this month.  Whether Huawei actually calls it the Pro is to be seen.
