Google News & Weather Update Brings Infinite Headline Scrolling

Google News & Weather has been updated with a new feature that basically allows you to infinitely scroll news headlines.  The new feature, named More Headlines, brings you 200 headlines to stories that you can scroll through and read.  The articles offered up are based on the settings you have in the app but also an algorithm to keep articles clustered together and to present you more relevant information.  It is a nice update to an app that has taking a little bit of a backseat to the recently revamped Google News app.

The new More Headlines feature is enabled by default once you have the latest version of the app.  That is version 3.1.4 for those keeping score at home.  You will get your normal weather card and headlines from categories that you have selected in the settings of the app.  Once you’ve gone past those sections, you will see the new More Headlines section.  Then just keep scrolling!

Google Play Newsstand Adds Weather Information

Google continues to push the Google Play Newsstand app as your single source for news and information about topics you care about as well as a magazine reader.  The latest update add something simple but important for those who start their day with this app:  Local weather.  Now when you open up the app, at the top in the Headlines section you will see the local temperature as well as the forecast high and low for the day.  You will also see an icon next to the temperature to indicate if it is sunny, raining, snowing and other weather conditions.

The updated version of the app is in the Google Play Store now and it is version 3.4.6 for those keeping score at home and if you already have the app installed on your phone or tablet, you should see the OTA update shortly.

In addition to the weather information, Google has also improved the article layouts in the app to improve loading speeds and performance.

Feedly for Android Update Brings Google Now Integration

The RSS reader/curation app Feedly for Android has been updated today, bringing several new features to the app.  The latest update, version 27.0.4 for those keeping score at home, has several new features including integration to Google Now if you are using the Google Now Launcher or have a Google device.  If you are not familiar with Feedly, it is a service that allows you to curate all of your RSS feeds into one place for easy reading.  For Windows Phone, the best Feedly reader is NextGen Reader while the Feedly for Android app serves that platform very well.

Nextgen Reader for Windows Phone Update Brings Further Enhancements

Nextgen Reader, the Feedly driven news and RSS app, has received a minor update today, bringing stability improvements along with a handful of new features.  I’ve been using Nextgen Reader since 2011 (Yes, it has been around that long) and I recently wrote a review of it outlining why I think it is the best Feedly/RSS reader available for Windows Phone.  At $2.99 for this universal app for Windows and Windows Phone, it’s well worth the price of admission.  This latest update, version 6.4.0.0 for those keeping score at home, brings mostly stability improvements but also a new personalization features as well.

Note that as of the time of this post that the Windows Phone version of the app had been updated and is available in the Windows Phone Store.  The Windows part of this universal app has not been updated yet but I expect that to happen today.  Regardless, if you buy it for either device, you get its counterpart free as part of the license.

CBS Local App for Windows Phone is an Impressive Local News App

The team over at CBS Interactive have been busy these past few weeks for us Windows Phone users.  First they release CBS News, one of the prettiest and well designed news apps available for Windows Phone and it has been a big hit (you can download it here).  Now they have released the CBS Local app.  This app, as the name suggests, brings you news, weather, sports and even lets you stream live audio and video from local stations all from within the app.  While it still has a few rough edges, the CBS Local app is quite impressive and certainly worth the download if you live in one of the 24 supported markets (or like me, live away from my hometown but want to keep up with it).
