Foursquare App Update Doesn’t Require An Account For Recommendations

The latest update to the Foursquare app for Windows and Windows Phone (Universal) brings an interesting twist to once hugely popular location check-in app.  You can now get personalized recommendations from the app on your devices without actually having to have a Foursquare account.  It is a significant shift for the app as Foursquare continues to focus on their main app as being personalized local content while their other app, Swarm, is for checking and more of the social networking side of the business.  Foursquare is shifting to a service instead of something you do.

This shift has not been received well by hardcore Foursquare users (Clinton raises his hand too) but it is clear that Foursquare wants their app to be the one that you get recommendations around you, even if you aren’t a registered Foursquare user.

Up to this point, to get local recommendations in the Foursquare app you had to have a Foursquare account.  That is no longer the case.  Simply start up the app on your Windows PC, Tablet or Phone, give it permissions to know

your location, and it will start giving you suggestions.  Those suggestions are based on other Foursquare users feedback but also on what you set as your personalized tastes.  In order for you to get the personalized tastes however, you will need to have a Foursquare account.  Frankly the Foursquare account is free and you can even sign in with your Facebook account if you want so there isn’t much point in not having an account.  However, for those who want to give it a go before committing, this new account-less requirement should be reason enough to try it out.

Likewise, if you want to use Swarm for location check-ins, you will need an account on Foursquare.

The Foursquare app is a Universal app so you once you download it you can download it for your Windows PC and Tablet through the Windows Store on those devices.  It’s free regardless.
