Chrome OS Beta Channel Updated With Second Chrome 68 Build

The second Chrome 68 based build has been made available for the Chrome OS Beta Channel.  Build 68.0.3440.34 (Platform version: 10718.29.0) is now available to most devices in the channel, the last stop before a build of Chrome OS is made available to everyone in the Stable Channel.

If you have a device that is running in the beta channel, you can type chrome://help in the browser bar and manually check for the update.  Given it was released on Friday, chances are you can get it on your device this morning pretty quickly.

Chrome OS Beta Channel Updated to First Chrome 68 Build

After being delayed following the update of the Chrome OS Stable Channel to Chrome 67, The Chrome OS Beta Channel has now received its first Chrome 68-based build.  The channel is now running build 68.0.3440.25 (Platform version: 10718.22.0) and it is available for the majority of devices in the channel starting today.

For those that may be new to Chrome OS, the Beta Channel is the last channel prior to a build being released to the general public in the Stable Channel.  You can always change your channel on your Chromebook by typing Chrome://help and then clicking on the Build Information section of the page.  Keep in mind that the hint is in the name:  The Beta Channel is still not ready for prime time so you could run into bugs or other issues that impact your daily workflow.

For those that are new to Chrome OS, the Chrome OS Dev Channel is considered the Alpha channel for the platform.  Normally this channel has a fair number of bugs or performance issues as it gets refined prior to be releasing into the Beta channel for broader testing.

As with most of these incremental updates to the beta app, this one is mostly focused on bug fixes and stability improvements as the Chromium team within Google, along with feedback from testers, continue to tweak the the build before it goes live for everyone in the Stable channel.

Team Drive Support Coming to The Chrome OS Files App

Good news this morning for Chrome OS users on G Suite domains that leverage Google Team Drive.  In the Chrome OS Dev Channel, native support for Team Drive is now available, meaning you can see your domain’s drive as well as your personal Google Drive account all within the Files app on your Chromebook.

For those that aren’t familiar with it, Google Team Drive is a more powerful version of Google Drive that consumers use, allowing for easy file management and sharing across the G Suite domain as well as a lot of advanced security to prevent file leakage.

Chrome 68 Will Bring New Add to Home Screen Behavior

The Chrome team at Google has announced that starting with Chrome 68, the banner to prompt users to add a site to their Home screen will be changing.  Today, when you visit a site and are prompted to add it to your Home screen, it is a rather large banner.  Starting with Chrome 68, this will be displayed in a mini bar at the bottom of the display.

The goal of all of this is to eventually have an install button option on the omni bar in Chrome and this is a stepping stone to that eventuality.
