Skype Qik and Skype for Windows Phone Sees A Minor Update

Microsoft has rolled out a minor – and I mean minor – update to Skype for Windows Phone that brings some tweaks to the UI and other fixes.  The update, version 2.28.0.39 for those keeping score at home, is available now and after updating, I personally haven’t seen any changes in the video-meets-messaging-meets-social networking app.  Regardless, if you use Skype on Windows Phone you should grab the update as it does have general fixes in it which would improve performance on certain devices. Skype Qik for Windows Phone also saw an update which brought a key new feature to the video sharing app.

Microsoft Hints That List of Windows 10 Mobile Devices to be Released Soon

The teasing and hinting of what is coming in Windows 10 Mobile continues.  Once again Microsoft’s Gabriel Aul has taken to Twitter to answer questions about the impending Windows Insider release of the preview, this time answering a question around compatible devices.  The question was asked if the dual-SIM Lumia 535 would be able to run the Windows 10 Mobile Preview.  Mr. Aul’s answer?

Once again the question becomes, what does “very very soon” mean exactly?

Cortana Now Reads Instant Answers Out Loud in Latest update

The personal assistant Cortana that is built into Windows Phones running Lumia Denim and is now in the Windows 10 technical preview continues to get mini, behind-the-scenes updates.  The latest update now brings the ability to read out loud instant answers to your questions.  To this point, when you asked a question like “What time is it?” Cortana would simply display the current time.  Now when you ask the same question, it reads out the time based on your location.

Lumia Denim Beings Rolling to Lumia 925 and Lumia 1020 on O2 in England

It’s been a big day for Lumia Denim.  In addition to the Lumia Icon for Verizon getting the update, those of you in the UK and on O2 should start seeing the update over-the-air on the Lumia 925 and the Lumia 1020 now.  This is something that O2 announced a few weeks ago that would be coming.

As a reminder, you can read my Guide to Lumia Denim and my Lumia Denim Rollout Guide for more detailed information on the release and the rollout process.

UPDATE: Verizon Lumia Icon Owners Should See Lumia Denim Soon

Update:  The Over-The-Air update for Lumia Denim on the Icon is now available.  Check your Icon by going to Settings>Phone Update to get it

For those on Verizon with the Lumia Icon, your wait is almost over.  Last night Verizon pushed out to their website a PDF outlining the benefits of Lumia Denim and Windows Phone 8.1.1 for the Lumia Icon.  This is good news albeit bittersweet.  Verizon has already said it is stopping sales of the Lumia Icon but the irony is that it could be the first device in the United States with a proper update to Denim.  This of course after Verizon never put out the Lumia Cyan update for the Icon.

Yes, my head is hitting my desk repeatedly too.

HERE Maps for Windows Phone Updated

Nokia has pushed out a significant map update to their HERE maps app for both Android and Windows Phone.  The update does not effect the app already installed on your Windows Phone but instead is a map update which you do from within the app itself.  According to the Nokia HERE maps blog, the update is a global update to new countries, water features and public transportation maps.

Unlocking Your Mobile is Easier Starting Today

Starting today, unlocking your paid for Windows Phone or other mobile device just became easier.  The major carriers in the United States – AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile and US Cellular – have all voluntarily committed to CTIA consumer standards set forth back in 2013.  The Consumer Code for Wireless Service was set out by the CTIA and it outlines guidelines for carriers when it comes to consumer rights and services.  These five carriers along with Bluegrass Cellular and Cellcom all agreed to abide by these guidelines and a key part of them is unlocking of devices.
