Android Supporting Chromebook List Gets Significant Update

It has been a while since the Chromium team has updated the Chromebook and Chromebox list of devices that support Android apps.  In fact, the last significant update happened back in August.  Now the team has made a big update to the list, updating it with the current status of Android apps on Chrome OS.

The list can be found here and as I’ve suggested before, I recommend readers who use Chrome OS to bookmark the page.  This is the official list of devices that do or will support Android apps.  Yes, it is often slow in getting updated but it is the official list nevertheless.

ASUS Updated Chromebook Flip C101 Available for Pre-Order

The updated ASUS Chromebook Flip C101 is now available for pre-order from both ASUS directly as well as Amazon.  The 10.1″ WXGA Rockchip powered Chromebook is only $299, a great price point for a budget but well appointed Chrome OS device.

The display on the Chromebook Flip C101 renders at 1280 x 800 and is powered by the Rockchip 3399 OP1 processor and Mali-T860MP4 graphics processor.  It has 4GB of LPDDR3 RAM and 16GB of storage.  That storage can be expanded thanks to the MicroSD card slot but given that Chrome OS leverages Google Drive for storage, that may not be a big deal.

Acer Chromebook 15 Gets Revamped in a Serious Way

Acer has announced today that a new Acer Chromebook 15 is coming in October.  The newest addition to their Chromebook lineup will come in two variants, a non-touchscreen and touchscreen, will have up to 12 hours of battery life, a Full HD display and now sports an all aluminum chassis.  It is a big step up from the current generation of Acer 15″ Chromebook.

The new Chromebook 15 will have 1920 x 1080 resolution 15.6″ IPS display and has MacBook Pro style upward facing speakers next to the keyboard.  It has USB-C connectivity for charging, a SD card slot that supports up to a 128GB card.

Today’s Deal – Samsung Chromebook Plus Down to $409 on Amazon

Today’s Deal is on the new Samsung Chromebook Plus.  The 12.3″ convertible has been selling for $450 but is down to $408.65 right now on Amazon.  That will get you one of the latest Chromebooks available and it will run Android apps natively right out of the box.

The Chromebook Plus has a 12.3″ display rendering at 2400 x 1600.  It is also a touchscreen which makes using the included stylus or your finger for apps easier.  It has 4GB of RAM, 32GB of Storage and you can expand that storage thanks to the MicroSD slot.  It has dual-microphones, a 720p Webcam and, of course, Wi-Fi.  It only ways 2.4 lbs so it is designed for portability and with it being able to be be used as a laptop or a slate, you have a lot of flexibility in where and how you use this Chromebook.

Android Compatible Chrome OS Device List Updated

The Chromium team within Google has updated the list of Chrome OS devices that can or will have support for Android apps.  The update is a significant improvement over the laundry list of devices that they had released last year as this update now lists the devices that have the ability to run Android apps, in which channel, and which ones have support planned.  Right now, the list of devices that support apps in the Stable channel (the main production channel) is pretty limited.  That list is:

  • Acer Chromebook R11  (CB5-132T and C738T)
  • AOpen Chromebox Mini
  • AOpen Chromebase Mini
  • Chromebook Flip C100PA
  • Google Pixel (2015)
  • Samsung Chromebook Plus

The list of Chrome OS devices that support Android apps in the Beta channel are even fewer:

  • Acer Chromebook R13 (CB5-312T)
  • Asus Chromebook Flip C302

It isn’t hard to figure out that the vast majority of devices out there are still listed as Planned.

Today’s Deal – SanDisk Ultra Fit 64GB USB Flash Drive for $18

Today’s Deal is on the low profile USB Flash Drives from SanDisk.  Over at Amazon you can pick up the SanDisk Ultra Fit 64GB drive for $18 with other sizes available.  The Ultra Fit series are designed to fit into the USB 3.0 port of your PC, Mac or Chromebook and not protrude like a normal Flash Drive.  Indeed, the idea is that you can leave it in your computer without ever having to take it out when you slip it into a bag or backpack.

The sale is on the 16GB, 32GB, 64GB and 128GB versions of the Ultra Fit.  All four are have a zippy read speed of 150MB/s so while they are too slow to run apps from, they are perfect for data, photos and videos.  The drives also come with SanDisk’s SecureAccess software to encrypt the drives should they ever be lost or stolen (although you can use MacOS and BitLocker encryption should you choose to do so instead).  I personally use one  of these Ultra Fit drives (the 64GB model) and have no problem recommending them.  They are a great performing accessory for your Chromebook (in my case).
